Smartphone users in Europe can look forward to this smokin’ hot little number being revealed today: meet the HTC S740, a marriage of the HTC Diamond and a Windows Mobile Standard device.

The S740 is a “smartphone with Diamond styling, including a sleek front and faceted back and a similar feature set. However instead of a touch screen, the S740 runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard and features both a numeric and slide out QWERTY keypad”

Highlights include:

· Size: 116.3 x 43.4 x 16.3 mm
· Weight: 140g with battery
· Networks: WCDMA/HSDPA: 900/2100 MHz for EU and Asia

The S740 will become available across Europe in September. I’m a bit worried about its 1000mAh battery, but otherwise I’m quite intrigued! :-)

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

Mitchell and his prior reviews have me spooked on this entire line…

I’m also not a big fan of these slide out keyboards. In practice they seem fine for casual users (one or two emails per day) — but if you do heavier texting and/or emailing they’re a pita to use (imho).

The looks are nice, but -ouch- those corners and edges are sharp!

reidme: I agree! Apple Agrees too as it seems everything’s going all curvy. There’s ALOT to be said for device ergonomics.

The S740 looks like a natural progression in the evolution of the S710 (Vox). And while I think it looks great (even if it is a fingerprint magnet), I do have to wonder about how it would feel in hand (its caressability, if you will) due to the sharp edges. Good point reidme.

    “I’m too sexy for my…”

Can I be too sexy for my phone?? this thing looks awesome. I’d love to give this a shot; but with 3G on it targeted to Europe/Asia, I wonder how great it would be here.

The other thing that I am curious about is its length. It looks awefully long…

“The other thing that I am curious about is its length. It looks awfully long…”

I laughed when I read this…and you would have too, if you knew half of the comments I thought about leaving. I’ll stop now.

    ya know…!

coupled (coupled… sheesh! there we go again!) coupled with the, “I’m too sexy…” comment I can see that.

that didn’t even cross my mind! Too Funny!!

    EXACTLY! ;-)

This device does looks nice, but I’m not a big fan of WinMo Standard. I think it loses something in the translation (from WinMo Pro) and there are too many app compatability concerns. If I want a WinMo device I’m more inclined to stick with a WinMo Pro device like the TouchPro or the Diamond, etc. But for those that like WinMo Standard and aren’t annoyed with its limitations, and are on a European carrier (for now) this might be an ideal device!

The edges shouldn’t be a problem – it looks pretty much like the Touch Diamond, and this one feels quite nice in the hand (or pocket).
So this 740 beeing narrower should fell just as good.
