Now that the latest iPod Touch design has been announced, there’s no reason to put off buying an old style Touch. The upgrades to the Touch design were so minor (slight case change and addition of Nike+) that it may make sense to purchase a refurbished model. As usual, once Apple introduces their new model, the old style (but perfectly usable) models move into refurbished status. Some of these refurbs are items that buyers returned. Others may be old style models that Apple reduced in price so they could clear out their stock.
Now available in the Apple Store are the old style Touch’s (throw it in a case and nobody will know) that are even cheaper than the ones announced today:
iPod Touch 8 GB Refurb - $179 (new model with similar capabilities is $50 more )
iPod Touch 16 GB Refurb - $239 (new model with similar capabilities is $60 more )
iPod Touch 32 GB Refurb - $319 (new model with similar capabilities is $80 more )

Nice, but people who want to play the cool new games on Touch will have to buy the new model with the accelerometer and the multi-touch display with the 3D graphics capability.

Well, the new Touch also adds a speaker and volume controls on the side (both much to my Touch 1G owning son’s consternation.)

@ Allen,
Doesn’t the 1G Touch have those features?
@ doogald,
My consternation too. I’d really like to have the speaker, but it’s hard to justify buying a new one. I think that’s the best new feature because now the Touch can actually be used as a PDA with alarms that are audible under normal conditions (I assume.) The piezo tweeter on the 1G is practically inaudible to my old ears.

Could be the touch has another nice feature hidden away for future updates: Bluetooth!

reidme: the specs don’t show any mention of the accelerometer and 3D graphics ability.

Allen, Isn’t that what lets it switch from portrait to landscape when you rotate it, or am I confused? I’ve got the game Labyrinth on mine where you control the little ball by tilting the screen.

reidme, Sorry to confuse you, I’m confused now myself. Poking around, the 1G touch does have the accelerometer. Sorry :/

No problem, I’m easily confused.
