Anyone see an odd irony that the Berlin Wall fell 19 years before AOL today reveals to your Mom (and other less techy subscribers) that there is indeed a world of email beyond the AOL gates. Starting today AOL adds the ability to retrieve email from sources other than AOL.
If you have Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail accounts now you can configure AOL to automatically retrieve email from those accounts and deposit it directly into your AOL inbox.
Forget for a moment that other services like Gmail have offered this option for quite some time already. Focus instead on the other announcement in AOL’s press release which states that coming soon they’ll integrate all your social media activity into one AOL centric portal. Imagine a perfect world where you never need to leave AOL to tell Facebook, Twitter, Friendfeed and LinkedIn friends that you’re eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich ! Very exciting stuff.
