Apple is recalling the UltraCompact USB Power Adapters that shipped with every iPhone 3G sold in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Peru. Apparently there is a potential defect as follows:

Apple has determined that under certain conditions the new ultracompact Apple USB power adapter’s metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock. We have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported. (Apple Support Article)

You can apply for a replacement (available starting October 10, 2008) via the link below. In the meantime, if your charger breaks off in the wall outlet- for heaven’s sake don’t pull the prongs out with pliers….everyone knows a butter knife is much better at removing those things (Note: That’s a joke).

The recall goes beyond the ones included with the iPhone 3G. Apple pulled the accessory from the Apple Retail Stores and the Apple Online Store too. The 5th Ave store had none to sell, I wanted one with my new iPod Touch. I may buy the old model with the folding prongs from the Apple Store online, anybody have the old one?. Also interesting is that J&R Music and Computer World is still selling the recalled adapter through Amazon.com, there is a recall warning on the page though. Not sure what J&R and Amazon expect the customers to do, buy the recalled item, only to send it in for exchange? Shouldn’t J&R stop selling the adapters?
