September 23: T-Mobile Unveils the First Android Phone

Posted on 22 September 2008 by

We’ve been writing about Android since the rumors first began swirling, and now the wait is finally over. On the off chance that you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few months, I’ll catch you up to speed: Google created an operating system called Android which has been further developed by the Open Handset Alliance, a group of more than 30 technology and mobile companies. It’s based on Linux, it’s open source, and it’s free.

As we have already mentioned, T-Mobile will be the first carrier to offer an Android driven phone, the HTC Dream. Tomorrow at 10:30am EDT, those interested can watch a live webcast of the press conference featuring T-Mobile and Google executives announcing its unveiling.

In the meantime, you can kill 50+ minutes watching Jason Chen discuss Android in a video taken at the Google I/O event last May…

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

I’m excited about Android. I’d like to watch the video, but when I click on it it says that it’s no longer available. Also, when I click on the “live webcast” link it links to an old article about Norton Internet Security.

    Moi aussi.

Hey Mark. I’m excited, too – and I can’t wait to get my hands on either the Dream or another Android phone. :-)

Try the video again – not sure what was going on, but it is working on this end.

The live webcast won’t be available until tomorrow at 10:30. I’ll add a note next to the link to that effect.

Hmmm, the video still says “We’re sorry, this video is no longer available.” Maybe they’re overloaded. I’ll try again later.

On thing that bothers me about the pics of the Dream is there’s no 5-way navigator. I guess you’re supposed to do it all via touch screen like the iPhone. I hope that’s not true of all Android phones.

In another pic I just saw of the Dream it looks like the center button is a track ball or 5-way stick. The video still says not available though.

Grrr! I am not sure what the problem is, but I have added the direct YouTube link:

    Sorry for the hassle!

    That worked, thanks!
