Amazon Kindle 2?

A whole bunch of photos of an alleged Amazon Kindle version 2 have appeared online at web site BoyGeniusReport. This device has been rumored to be delivered in the last quarter of this year and now conveniently is leaked out around the same time that Sony announces their latest eBook reader for November delivery. According to the BGR web site the nasty book cover holder of the original Kindle is out in favor of a leather sleeve for Kindle 2. If these photos are indeed of a next generation Kindle, one cannot help but wonder if the apparent continued use of side control buttons means that a touch screen will not make it to the next generation Kindle. Recent news reports from Forbes have the iPhone stealing the eBook reading lead from Kindle. The recently announced Sony PRS-700 Reader is slated to include a touch screen interface when the device appears in November 2008.

I don’t really see the usefulness of a touchscreen in an ebook reader, personally. I used to read ebooks on my pocket pc (axim x5! old stuff here :P ) and I used the little jog wheel on the side to scroll, never the screen. Since there’s a hardware keyboard, I fail to see what the touchscreen could be used for, especially considering the extra battery life it probably uses. After all, this isn’t meant to “do it all” like an iphone or such.

A touchscreen eases things like selecting a book, selection a section of screen to look up (like a word definition). On the iPhone, the touch screen is used to “swipe” the page for a more natural page turning feeling.

A touchscreen can be quite useful in this application.
