On the iPhone, the touch screen is used to "swipe" the page for a more natural page turning feeling.
A touchscreen can be quite useful in this application.

A touchscreen eases things like selecting a book, selection a section of screen to look up (like a word definition). I used to read ebooks on my pocket pc (axim x5! old stuff here :P) and I used the little jog wheel on the side to scroll, never the screen. Since there's a hardware keyboard, I fail to see what the touchscreen could be used for, especially considering the extra battery life it probably uses. After all, this isn't meant to "do it all" like an iphone or such.

I don’t really see the usefulness of a touchscreen in an ebook reader, personally.
