I’ve been looking for a battery powered light I can use in my hallway. I’m constantly forgetting to flip the light switch at the bottom of my stairs when I make a quick trip upstairs (usually to get the kids their seventh drink of water at night when they should be sleeping). My few requirements were that it have a motion sensor so the battery would last. I found my ideal light yesterday at Costco. They have the Sylvania Wireless Motion Sensor Anywhere LED Light 2 pack for $17.99 (Note: This looks like an in-store deal only – I was unable to find it online).
These lights mount either by adhesive (YUK), screw, or magnet. I’m impressed at how well the motion sensor works, how the light is timed to stay on for just a minute or so, and how the built in sensor keeps it from turning on in daylight . The manufacturer claims a 13 foot light range and 130 degree radius. In testing it perfectly lights my hallway. Each light takes 3 AAA batteries, contains 3 white LEDs and have a built in photo sensor so they only activate when it is dark! If you have areas in your house that need extra light on occasion – look for these on your next trip to Costco.

I bought a pair while at costco on your recommendation. Seems to work as advertised. They aren’t terribly bright, but good for night lighting.
I would say your condo must be older as most electrical code requires at least a 2 way switch between rooms or on stairs to avoid the hazards of just what you describe. You need to be able to turn a light off that you should turn on for safe travel and that’s how code’s been written. I thought that rule was about 15 to 20 years old or so. The only time you can now get away with one light switch is if the room is a “dead end” meaning you have to come back to the light switch to get out.

I just bought these today (not on your recommendation, just found them and now found your post). I put one in my basement stairway so I don't have to leave the stairway light on when I'm in the basement. It looks as though it is going to work out great! I'm very impressed.
