Here’s a reminder that if you’re a Sprint subscriber you have until January 1, 2009 to break your Sprint contract with zero ETF. This little loophole is courtesy of a fee increase that’s scheduled to take effect then. On that date Sprint is raising their non-government mandated Administrative Fee from .75/mo to .99 per month. Your contract lets you not agree to this little change and therefore exit your Sprint contract early.

FYI – I actually called in to take advantage of this today and according to Sprint you can not take advantage of the fee increase to cancel until the fee has actually been applied to your account.
So since Sprint is planning on applying the increase on Jan. 1, 2009 you can not call in to terminate because of the rate increase until the rate increase appears on your first bill in 2009.
My billing cycle ends on the 17th of every month. They told me to call back on or around the 25th as my bill should be fully generated by then to see if the rate increase was indeed applied. If it was I can then cancel at that point.
The rep. did try to talk me out of canceling by offering a $5.00 credit to “more than cover” the total of the rate increase. So even if you don’t plan on canceling it might pay to call in to request the credit. Every little bit helps.

I’d call again.
There were at least two people who had chat transcripts of this being done.
It will likely take some persistence and if Sprint can put you off from canceling they will.
Be sure to check out the script in the link. It seems to show some pretty good answers what what is probably also a script on Sprint’s end.

Yes it looks like they moved or merged a duplicate thread after I posted

Based on the thread it seems half the people who tried were able to terminate now while the other half were told to wait until 1/1/09. The ones who were able to do so did it via the online chat. I’m looking for that now.

Okay success.
I was able to cancel (effective at the end of my next billing cycle (1/17/09) via the online chat.
I guess I could have simply called back on 1/18/09 but at least it’s out of the way.
Thanks Wayne.
Good bye Instinct.

Oh how I wish I could have used this back in March when I canceled three sprint lines…and coughed up $600! Great find, Wayne!

Sprint customer service confirmed ability to get out of contract ETF-free due to this fee increase. Chat log from Dec. 29 2008 below:

And great to hear. Hey, I've heard about Sprint admin. fees going up 1/1/09
Hey Shawn
15:25:31 Shawn L
How are you ?
15:25:39 Alex Novosad
I'm great, had awesome Xmas, u?
15:26:14 Shawn L
I am doing well also. X Xmas was great.
15:26:21 Shawn L
Thank you for asking .
15:26:41 Alex Novosad
Sure thing
15:26:59 Alex Novosad
that true?
15:27:11 Shawn L
Yes it is Alex
15:27:44 Alex Novosad
Hmm ok well I'll be straightforward then – I believe that gives me a legal right to cancel my contract without EFT, doesn't it?
15:27:58 Shawn L
Yes it does.

Also just got this info: must wait until after 1/1/09 to cancel and we got 30 days to do so. Not sure if you need to note your account pre-1/1/09 about wanting to cancel, but I guess it doesn't hurt to chat with a rep and ask them to note your account that you're not happy with fee going up and wanting to cancel:
3:38:37 PM Lauren C Thank you for contacting Sprint. My name is Lauren. How may I assist you today?
3:38:53 PM Alex Novosad hi Lauren, I'll be quick and to the point
3:39:02 PM Lauren C All right.
3:39:20 PM Alex Novosad With Sprint admin. fee going up, I'd like it noted on my account that I'd like an EFT-free termination when I'm ready to cancel
3:40:17 PM Lauren C All right. If you are interested in canceling your account, you will only have 30 days from the date of the change to cancel without being charged for the early termination fee.
3:40:49 PM Alex Novosad so you're saying there's no point in you making this note on my account right now?
3:42:03 PM Lauren C I have to note your account of our conversation, however, if you are wanting to cancel the account without being charged the early termination fee, you will only have 30 days from the change start date to cancel without being charged.
3:42:32 PM Alex Novosad ok, so then I can't cancel today yet, correct? Just asking ot be sure =)
3:42:43 PM Lauren C That is correct.

Help! Anyone know how best to proceed then if I want to cancel within the 30 days after Jan 1st but still keep my phone number? It says in terms and conditions that you must tell them you are canceling due to increase; however, if I understand correctly when getting new service carrier you dont cancel and let the new carrier cancel your service in order to retain number. Thanks!

I was able to terminate my contract (which has 5 lines on it) while chatting with the sprint rep online. They said that the contract will be terminated after the next billing cycle date for my account (1/4/2009).
I had a hard time finding the link to start up the chat session at first, but if you go to this link and click on the button that says "Got Questions? Click to chat". http://nextelonline.nextel.com/NASApp/onlinestore...

I called today and I was told I have until 3/15/09 to cancel. I saved the chat so just in case I am told otherwise.
February 5th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
is there a way to cancel and still get your number ported over to another provider?
February 7th, 2009 at 9:09 pm
IT WORKS!!! I just called in today 2/7/2009 and cancelled my sprint account. Use this information : "On that date Sprint is raising their non-government mandated Administrative Fee from .75/mo to .99 per month. Your contract lets you not agree to this little change and therefore exit your Sprint contract early." Ask to speak with a customer retention representative tell them you want out of your contract because of the fee increase. act like you know your rights as a customer and they will do it! thanks for the post wayne.

Hey I signed a 2-yr contract January 31st. Since the deadline has been extended to March 15, is there any chance I can still get out of the contract?
February 10th, 2009 at 12:16 am
Thank you to all of you. I Just did it and took about 5 minutes on the phone. Again thanks
February 14th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
Thanks! I just canceled my 2 lines. Actually, they offered free internet if I don't cancel … Just in case you are using it to bargain.
February 15th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
I used this method but i didn't want to get out of my contract so I went to see what they could do for me. I got unlimited texting for 7.50 a month but my cousin used this and got 3 new phones and unlimited texting. Thank you sooooooooooooooo much!!!!!!!

I’m so mad I’m just now seeing this – I usually check upon this topic online every month or so – I’v been waiting since Dec. 07 to get out of my contract.
To the person who was told to wait until March 15 to terminate, can you give me any details? I’m still going to call and try to cancel!
March 31st, 2009 at 10:28 am
Hey felina,
I just came across this forum. I am so pissed I missed my opportunity for No ETF. Any luck? Anyone else have a way to cancel early without fee? My contract goes until 5/23/2010.

I just called sprint to see if they could do this for me and they refused. I’ve been a Sprint customer since 2001 and was only trying to cancel one unused line from my family plan. Phone is still in the original box and it’s never been dialed. Every time I think sprint might redeem themselves and become a better company they disappoint me!
