One of the iconic comic book images, along with Superman leaping over tall buildings and Batman swinging in to fight crime with his own unique vigilante justice, was Dick Tracy’s chiseled chin jutting out toward his wrist as he received a communication from the Chief.
Back in this golden age of comic book days, the idea of talking on a tiny communicator like this was…well, it was the stuff of science fiction. Yet, there was Dick Tracy, detective like none other, in strip after strip carrying on conversations with the Chief using his wrist communicator – as though it were no big deal at all. Science fiction, indeed!!
Well, science has a funny way of catching up with the fiction, and ultimately making it just science. Take 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or From The Earth to the Moon. When these books were written, no one imagined that we might one day travel underwater in submarines or into space using rocket ships. Well, the same can be said for portable communications. Science fiction has long been enamored with tiny, mobile communicators – like the comm devices in star Trek. And the Holy Grail of this quest may just have been the Dick Tracy wrist communicator.
Well, here we are just starting 2009, and a company called Neutrano is offering the Wristfone – Dick Tracy and a whole lot more. The Wristfone features a cell phone, camera, music player, and plenty more. Want to hunt down Mumbles and his gang yourself? This little beauty will only set you back $250-$300.
