I’m no Apple user or customer, never had Mac, iPod or iPhone, but I do appreciate what he’s done with Apple in last 10 years and the huge impact he had on the industry as a whole.
Unfortunately, the majority of the industry are just corporations, doing copycat stuff and looking at the bottom line, there is little real innovation, most of the industry is just copying the latest and greatest thing from their competitor and adding some MHz, GB, pixels…

So in my opinion, if this absence becomes permanent, the whole industry will become more complacent, but I’m also afraid that Apple will suffer the most. Apple is Steve and no matter who will replace him it will not be Apple as it’s now any more. It won’t happen over night, but I’m afraid without Steve, Apple will become another gray “me to” corporation doing plastic Atom based Netbooks for $500.

I would say Apple depends on Steve more than the industry. Some recent innovations from Apple have been in Linux for years. The iPhone itself is a marvel of engineering, but the software also steals lots of ideas from others. Granted, Apple put together these ideas into a piece of hardware, but they haven’t done anything revolutionary in this regard. They just made the revolutionary EASIER. Something they excel at.

Jobs had alot to do with the Apple of today, but I believe that he has capable people leading the business now. Apple of the past was trying to be lead by people who have no idea how to run a tech company. Apple, on the other hand, has lots of experienced people at the helm now. Apple will be just fine if Steve passes.

A liver transplant now?

I think that there are a lot of people who are not even doctors on TV making diagnoses and treatment plans based on less interaction with the patient than Senator (and Dr.) Bill Frist had with Terry Schiavo, and we now how FUBARed that turned out to be.

Steve Jobs is right: if this was you, would you want rampant speculation about your health all over the internet? He should have never responded to any rumors in the first place. I’ve found all of this, for the last seven months, just so pathetic.

I totally agree. Apple has received the lion’s share of the gadget dollars in our family over the last couple of years and every penny was well spent. I don’t think this would have happened without Steve Job’s leadership, vision, and determination to ship products that “don’t suck.” I want him to be well and I understand his desire for privacy.

Canon comes in a close second. I’ve yet to be disappointed with one of their products. I just recently took the plunge and ordered an EOS 5D Mark II.
