If you’re dating a gadget guy or girl, getting them a gift for a special occasion such as Valentines Day, which ack! – is just around the corner (!!), can be a bit of a challenge.

That’s why I thought the newly designable Flip Minos were such a great idea. You can get them in either the HD version with 4GB ($229), or the slim version with 2GB ($179), and the best part is that there is no extra cost to use the Valentines Day related designs in Flip’s online gallery or to upload your own images and create something truly special. You can even buy a gift certificate if your creative juices have completely dried.

Valentines Day designs will be available soon at Cafe Press; in the meantime, here are two more styles to tide you over…

Weighing just over 3 oz., the slim Mino, $179.99, and MinoHD, $229, are a great alternative to a pricey bulky camcorder. The Mino HD features 720p resolution, and 4GB of memory. Mino carries 2 GB of memory. Both offer 60 minutes of recording time and all-new built-in FlipShare software for easy saving, organizing and sharing of video from your computer. Mino and Mino HD are the first and only “designable” camcorders. And, as with other Flips, the powerful built-in software allows consumers to plug the camcorder’s signature flip-out USB arm into any computer for saving, organizing, editing and uploading of video to YouTube, MySpace, AOL Video and other sharing sites. All Flip camcorders are fully compatible with Windows software as well as Apple’s Mac video applications including QuickTime, iMovie, and iDVD.

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

I have the less-fashionable 30min Flip video camera from last year, and it's great little tool, though at first you need to install the software/codec for the flip videos. The flip-out usb switch is nice too, plus the device doesn't have to be "on" to transfer videos to the computer. VERY user-friendly.
