I was terrified of making a mistake and being stuck with a less than fully functioning OS.

What was so bad about two SKUs — heck half the reason I went with a Mac is I didn't want to screw with what version of Vista to get. Let users choose the features that they want, including letting enterprises choose the features that they want to lock their users from using at work. They can even include easy-to-change bundles of features that add or subtract features that seem to work together. And you wouldn't just choose on install - you can add or remove features whenever you wish.
* - of course, they still need the anti-trust featureless skus for Europe, and maybe a really cheap basic sku for developing nations that lets them buy Windows for less than it costs in developed nations, though without to ability to add those extra features.

I agree – an Apple-ish one sku*. With 7 different SKUS, you then have a bigger support issue in that you need to know what version your using. Fortunately, at a corporate level, this is lessened.
I fully believe 90 percent of the extra crap in the ultimate edition ISN'T needed by alot of people. Some things are like Bit Locker. However, most Linux distributions come with way more and that's even when you choose to pay for it like with Suse Linux or Red Hat. I think they should just charge 129 like Apple does for ONE version of Windows. Then, on install, you CHOOSE what to install. CHOOSE whether to install Bit Locker or the other stuff.

ONE SKU. PERIOD. Win 7 Starter and Home Basic will not be available everywhere, only "emerging markets."
Win 7 Premium and Professional will be the normal choices that you will have.
Win 7 Enterprise will be available in volume licenses only for businesses
Win 7 Ultimate to me seems iffy. I'm not sure if that is going to be a consumer choice or an OEM thing.

From what I understand, the "normal user" will only have two, maybe three different version to choose from.

Win 7 Starter and Home Basic will not be available everywhere, only "emerging markets."<br
