GearChat: Windows Mobile 6.5 Officially Unveiled

Posted on 16 February 2009

Judie: We can’t be in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress, but thanks to the generosity of Scott Rockfeld at Microsoft, we can show you some screenshots of Windows Mobile 6.5, which is officially being unveiled at the show. Rather than post just one person’s thoughts, we decided that this would be a good time to give impressions from several very opinionated people. Bear in mind that these are judgments based on what is shown specifically in the screenshots, and that we recognize there are likely features present which may not be evident by the pictures shown. Let’s start with the newly designed Home screen… Judie: Hmmm…this should look familiar to anyone with a Zune. I like the use of lowercase letters, but I wonder if it will seem too informal to business users. I also like the immediate information given by the numbered notations on email. Christopher Gavula: I like the new look overall.  I’m a big fan of usable interfaces and I felt the old WM learning curve was a bit high.   I really think MS is headed in the right direction with this redesign.   As I mentioned – I like this look, but I wish the numbers for calls/emails/etc. stood [...]

Today’s a big day for mobile phones as Mobile World Congress gets into full swing, and it’s going to be fun to watch all of the new devices as they get launched. Here’s the latest: LG Electronics is introducing the Arena (LG-KM900), “a fully loaded multimedia phone that offers an exhilarating audio and video experience made possible by LG’s intuitive new 3D S-Class User Interface.” This brief video tease of the GUI looks amazing, and the form factor looks pretty sweet as well. I could see carrying one of these in my bag… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

T-Mobile’s BlackBerry 8900 – why the lack of 3G may not matter as much as you think

Posted on 15 February 2009

Have you been pondering whether to purchase a BlackBerry 8900 or T-Mobile? Every review I’ve read says the lack of faster 3G data (the 8900 is EDGE only) is a deal killer. Nobody wants the pokey stuff now the blazing 3G speeds are available for about the same monthly fee. I agree in concept. Given a choice – faster cellular data is always better. Always. However before you write off T-Mobile’s 8900, let me give you my pitch about why I just bought an 8900 and why you should take a serious second look at this device.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Why then, you might ask, is my MSI Wind now in the Philippines with one of my writers from What’s On iPhone? It’s a long story that reflects my technology — fickleness.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
