Palm Pre still not ready for mere mortals to hold

According a new report today, the much awaited but never held Palm Pre is going to take some more time to come to market. The Palm Pre, announced at CES to much drooling but no hands on opportunities, may yet go down in history as the phone that either saved or sank two companies simultaneously. There’s a ton riding on the new webOS platform for both Palm (who desperately need a hit phone to replace the aged Treo line) and Sprint (who are bleeding subscribers). In my book delays are usually not a positive sign. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse is quoted as saying that Sprint wants to make sure they can have production ramped up to a reasonable level before launching the product. He added the device will not be launched before it is ready.

The other side of the coin is they aren't doing what apple did. Push it out the door with tons of issues, battery life problems, 3g issues, lines around the block due to stockouts etc. Same disaster with the Wii and PS3.

I'd rather wait an extra month or two and have them readily available and them not needing a major service pack before you open the box.

Only time will tell which one of us is right.

If the Pre does come out a winner – this will most certainly be the comeback story of the century.

The combination of network, price/value of rate plans and the Palm Pre can not be matched by any other carrier out there. Period. The perception of Sprint is about to change, which is something that is long overdue. Sprint has improved their customer service, their network is strong (3G stronger than most) and their rate plans are a great value.

My opinions of Sprint are in the minorty…for now.

Sprint has a great network in CT. The problem that Sprint might face is other carriers enter into a price war which brings the whole industry down. The weakest players would probably fare worse.

Personally I cannot wait to see how this all plays out. It's looking like the Pre needs to get out damn quickly to help Palm financially — and to a larger extent Sprint.
