About 2 months ago, I reviewed the Samsung Epix for Gear Diary. At the time, I really liked the device. I still do, but the romance is starting to wane a bit. Here’s why…
I am having a really weird experience with the device. Every so often, the sound will completely cut out, regardless of what the volume level is set at, be they loud, medium, soft, vibrate or completely off. When this happens, I’ve also noticed that the device won’t turn on when the power button is pressed. It stops to think about turning on, and then maybe, just maybe the LCD will turn on and I will be able to use the device.Â
Everything, well…almost everything works. When the sound is out, the sound is OUT. I can’t hear anything. Period. The microphone still works, so people can hear me on a phone call, but I can’t hear them, and the only way that I’ve been able to correct this problem (because the darn thing doesn’t have a soft reset hole/button), is to remove the battery. Not fun, and not nice.
Is anyone else having this problem? Does your Epix become unresponsive? Does the sound cut out entirely? If so, I’d really love to hear from you. I’m wondering if mine isn’t defective, or if there’s a larger problem…

I bought an Epix right after its release. It has a few foibles that need to be corrected with a ROM update, as has every WM phone I've ever owned, but I haven't had any hardware issues. I hope what you are experiencing is not common and that you get to the bottom of it soon. Did you install any software just prior to the strange behavior?

I have not experienced the exact same problem but have experienced a number of other problems with my epix, including locking up while charging, beeping in the middle of the night as if it is being put on and off the charger, signal problems, and the most terrible thing, the slog dump. Check out the forum thread here. http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?... and is that doesn't work search for "This is forced SLOG DUMP" on google. To make matters worse, I and others have submitted realistic reviews of the Epix to the ATT site only to have those never be accepted, yet rave reviews continue to be posted.

I haven't installed any software on it in a while, so I find this confusing. I also don't have a lot installed on it, period, so its fairly clean.
I do have trouble with either it kicking off a vibration notification, and continuing to vibrate even after the notification has been dismissed. Again, the only way to stop that is to pull the battery/soft reset. Everything else seems to be working correctly; and I have the notification update that was released installed, so I'm not sure what is going on.
this problem with the sound can be very frustrating, as I have received calls only to have to hang up, soft reset, and then call back.

I have the power button issue! This morning, in fact, it was frozen when I pulled it off the charger, and I pulled the battery. Upon reboot, I found out my SPB backup didn't go, so then it rebooted after the backup, and then promptly froze again. It's been fine since though.
It did this a few nights in a row back in Nov and then behaved fine until today. I don't know what the deal is…but I am glad to hear I am not alone!

Yup. Same problem. Seems to happen now every day or so. Only a battery removal power down will fix it. I really liked the phone when I first got it, but it's turning out to be more trouble than it's worth. Drops way more calls than my colleagues' iPhones and BlackBerrys too.

Mine does the same thing. It started when I installed the notification patch.
Rebooting the phone would fix it for a while, but the problem always came back.
It would take several presses on the power button to turn it on, the touch screen would not respond and there would usually be no sound.
Removing the patch fixed it, but now I don't know when I get mail unless I check.

I am having the EXACT same thing!!! In fact, it happened to me for the first time last week.. but I decided to 'reboot' when the sound went out. It hesitated, which scared me to death, then it eventually powered up after a couple of minutes.
Lastnight, I did not have the sound issue but the battery was very low, so before I went to bed I plugged it in to charge (via USB). This morning it did not seem the battery was low but when I got to work and took it out of my purse it was dead.
Now for the current- After being plugged into the charger (a wall charger) for over an hour, the light will not turn on to verify it's being charged, and it will not power on. I have plugged the charger back in and changed the outlet the charger is plugged in to… I hope it isn't fried..

Same problem here. I've had my Epix only a few days and I am having the unresponsive power on problem. Removing the battery fixes it for me also, but that is going to get old quickly. If anyone finds a solution that would be wonderful.

in my case the power button was unresponsive bc I installed google search and google maps onto the phone. once I uninstalled them, the issue seems to have gone also.
