Looks like some type of new speedier wireless device is headed to the Peek wireless family. According to tidbits dropped on Peek’s site a new Pronto device that is “much, much faster in every way possible” is coming soon. Speculation abounds that this will be a 3G version of the Peek though I’m not so sure the creaky T-Mobile pipes support that marketing push. My guess is that you’re looking at a device device that gets a processor/memory bump and maybe Wi-Fi. Peek via SlashGear Continue reading on Gear Diary …

We all have those – uh no moments – defined as the period of time from you feel the BlackBerry being un-hooked from your belt and hearing the first splash of water. In that split second you have to make a decision. Fish it out. File an insurance claim. If your BlackBerry took a swim and refuses to come to life – how about this old (but workable) 7290. It’s unlocked and comes without the need for a pesky contract. If you’re on a GSM carrier (in the US that means T-Mobile or AT&T) this BlackBerry will work just fine. Sure, it’s not that sporty but it will save over $500 that a new replacement BlackBerry will cost. Daily Steals Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I saw this last week on ComputerWorld, and haven’t had a chance to say anything about this until now. Sorry… Real Life intrusions can suck sometimes. On top of that, I noticed the date… very close to when Apple was going to make its big announcements on 3/17, so I decided to hang out to see if any information about Snow Leopard might also come out on 3.0 Day. It didn’t, not even in the Q&A period; oh well… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Popular Instant Messaging software program Beejive appears to have received an overnight upgrade to include Facebook chat among their supported instant message clients. Beejive is popular as a chat client because it consolidates multiple instant messaging accounts into one program and removes the need for users to keep changing IM software to chat to “buddies” on different services. Beejive was one of the first widely used messaging programs available on multiple platforms (versions for the web, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile are also available) and to incorporate a wide variety of Instant Message clients into one. Messaging clients now include: AIM/MobileMe, Google Talk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN/Windows Live, MySpace IM, Yahoo Messenger and Facebook IM. Update: Just downloaded the BlackBerry (1.1.1) version of BeeJive… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Today’s Woot! offers you a way to reveal your inner Star Wars geek (as if you hadn’t already!) while dressing up your cubicle: $29.99 gets you one of two sets of six bobble heads. It may take a bit of planning to figure out where they’ll each go, as these aren’t puny little stand-ins, they are each about 7″ tall… Unfortunately my favorites aren’t here. There’s no Han Solo, no R2D2, and no Padmé Amadala with her distinctive lipstick applying skills. Oh well, at least I can console myself with some Boba Fett and Darth Maul action. Want in on it? Then I suspect you had better hurry. Like all Woot! deals, these are one day only. And when they are gone, Woot! won’t be handing out rain checks…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

My means for timing boiled eggs has always been the telephone. Each time before I start making a hard boiled egg I’m on the phone to either my Mom or Jennifer to ask (yet again) how long to boil the egg. Now Prezzy’s has their Beep Egg which – a plastic egg timer that sits in boiling water alongside your eggs. Once done there’s a song that plays to notify you that it’s time to remove the egg. Prezzybox have the answer in the shape of the egg-stremely entertaining Beep Egg. This little egg will make sure you never get a boiled egg wrong again! It lives next to your eggs, wherever you normally keep them, and goes in the pan alongside its eggy Continue reading on Gear Diary …

[Note: This is a joint review by Doug Goldring, Judie Lipsett, Dan Cohen, and Kerry Woo. It is being simultaneously posted on Just Another Mobile Monday and Gear Diary. If you haven't already, then take a look at Doug's The Kindle 2: First Look and Unboxing and Judie's Unboxing the Amazon Kindle 2.] Doug: One thing about sites like Gear Diary and Just Another Mobile Monday, we love our gadgets (I know, shocking!) We love playing with them almost as much as we love writing and telling you about them. Rarely does a week go by when one of us doesn’t have something new and exciting. Sometimes we purchase these devices just like anyone else, other times we are lucky enough to get the device loaned or sent to us for review. Rarely has a device created as much buzz, however, as the Kindle 2. Whether you love it or hate it, it has everyone around here talking. Not just one, but four of us waited impatiently for delivery of our Kindle 2’s. So, now here we sit – Dan, Judie, Kerry and myself – each of us has used a variety of eBook readers in the past, whether it [...]
