Kiffmeister–there are some countries (France, Hong Kong) that legally require unlocked GSM versions of phones sold in those markets. So Palm will more or less have to make an unlocked GSM Pre. The question is when it will be available.

Of course, Palm (via MotionApps) is making a “great gesture to Palm’s loyal consumer base” but NOT to its more recent customers who bought WinMo devices…

I have to admit separating from all of these things when the PDA became secondary to the phone, but I think this is a smart move that will definitely ease the transition for those with a loyalty and/or investment in Palm apps.

I’ll take a serious look at it when the unlocked version becomes available, but will there be one? This tied-to-a-specific-carrier business model sucks, especially when the dirty deal blocks the distribution of unlocked phones…

I will buy a Pre as soon as it lands, and I will give its native apps a shot before buying the Classic application.
I am happy that someone has developed Classic, but I wish Palm did.
