One of the neat things about Gear Diary is that Judie has gathered a collection of writers who use a wide range of devices. While we all share a passion for gadgetry, the way we express that passion is quite different from one GD’er to the next.
As I was working on a review of my new LiveScribe pen earlier today I wrote the sentence
“With the exception of my various Apple devices this is by far my favorite gadget purchase in a long, long while…”
It got me wondering what device (that is CURRENTLY IN OUR POSSESSION) we are each most excited about. I’ve always loved Mad-Libs and so I sent the following to everyone and asked them to fill it in.
My favorite current gadget is ______. I’ve had it for _____ and love it because it ____ and ______. It is definitely something I would purchase again in _________.
The result… the first “Gear Diary Gear-Libs”.
Joel McLaughlin — My favorite current gadget is my Asus 1000HE. I’ve had it for 2 weeks and love it because it is small and has long battery life. It is definitely something I would purchase again in a heartbeat.
Mark Licari — My favorite current gadget is my HTC Advantage. I’ve had it for 2 years and love it because it has a huge readable screen and is really pocketable. It is definitely something I would purchase again when the next version comes out. Also a big fan of the Livescribe.
Jessica Fritsche – My favorite current gadget is my Apple TV. I’ve had it for 4 months and love it because it lets me load up Boxee and catch up on my downloaded TV, listen to Internet radio like Pandora and last.fm, and watch Hulu! It is definitely something I would purchase again if mine were to suddenly stop functioning. (and I might eventually upgrade the hard drive and use it as a media server!) (Apparently Jessica didn’t read the instructions regarding just filling in the blanks because she also wrote…) First runner up is my iPhone 3G–it’s my LIFE and I would be lost without it…and I’ll be sorely tempted to upgrade the hardware when they come out with the next version.
Raymond Yu — My favorite current gadget is my unibody MacBook pro. I’ve had it for 5 months and love it because it runs Mac OS X (which I love) and is an absolute screamer. It is definitely something I would purchase again (whenever the next big update comes out)
Michael Anderson — My favorite current gadget is Psion Revo. I’ve had it for 10 years and love it because it still syncs perfectly and holds a 12+ hour charge after 10 years (and has an awesome keyboard). It is definitely something I would purchase again in a heartbeat if they updated the OS and processor and screen! (Michael must have gone to the “Jessica School of Instruction Ignoring” because he added…) I’m also really loving my Dell Axim x51v and my iPod Touch and my DSi and PSP 3000 and Lenovo s10 and Macbook Pro and … aw crap, I just love ALL of my gadgets!
Mark Vlastelica — My current favorite gadget is my BlackBerry Storm. I love it because it keeps me connected and entertained with my friends and school. I would definitely purchase the Storm 2 again if I can resist the next iPhone and the Palm pre.
David Chao – So, my favorite current gadget is an my 3G iPhone. I’ve had it a 3 months and absolutely hated the idea of going to ATT. I had a client that was willing to pay for it and pay for the air time so I really didn’t have much of a choice. I also have a blackberry and a HTC Touch from Verizon. So much has been written about the iPhone so I won’t repeat it. However, what I am surprised with his the call quality and battery life really isn’t that bad. The email experience is far better than the Blackberry and the Touch and since I’m almost moving from client to client, it has been great. (The “Student Body President” of the Jessica School went on…) However, the best purchase I have made is my Timbuk 2 bag Hacker Daypack. I have one of those really big Tumi bags with the internal case. The bag was too big to haul around all the time and my sister came to visit with this little Hacker Daypack. It has held up so well, and I can ride my bike with it. The bag really protects my MBP.
Carly Zektzer — My favorite current gadget is my samsung epix. I’ve had it for 6 months and love it because it is like a personal assistant and tracks everything I would otherwise forget. It is definitely something I would purchase again in a heartbeat (or when the new windows mobile 6.5 handsets come out!).
Raymond Ser — I was going to go with all my Apple stuff as well, but there’re a lot
of us iFans here! So I’ll do something different: My current favourite gadget is my car, an Audi A8. I’ve had it for 6 months and I love it because it’s a giant gadget containing lots of other gadgets. Best of all, it has an iPod dock so it works with my other favourite gadget, my iPhone! The Livescribe is pretty cool too, can’t wait for more apps to be released – the translator has been such a tease…
Larry Greenberg — If I’m being honest I have to go with the easy answer. My favorite gadget is the Apple iPhone 3G. I’ve had it since the day it launched. Actually I camped out overnight and was 6th in line to buy one at my local Apple retail store. I love it because it does such a great job of keeping me connected in a variety of ways and it’s always there when I need to kill some time. It’s definitely something I would purchase again when the next model is released. (Larry, recognizing that it is always fun to be the one making the rules found the loophole and added…) Now if I was to follow Dan’s lead and exclude all Apple products it would read something like….
My favorite gadget is my Garmin Forerunner 405. I’ve had it since the day it launched and love it because it keeps me honest in tracking my speed and distance during my runs. I’m a long distance runner and the Forerunner has been on my wrist while I ran my last ten marathons. It’s my best training partner. It’s definitely something I would purchase again and plan on doing when the newest model is released this summer.
Jeff Frantz — This is actually a tough question because it causes me to consider which gadget is really my favorite vs. which one I use the most, and those aren’t necessarily the same thing. I use my iPhone 3G constantly and I love it. However, my current favorite gadget is my MacBook Air. I’ve had it for 4 months and love it because it’s light, portable, and solid feeling. Plus, the SSD seems pretty darn fast. It is definitely something I would purchase again when there’s a major upgrade. (Then, proving that we’re not All Battery Powered all the time, Jeff added something that, it turns out, many of us also use…) I don’t know if this counts as a gadget or not, but I also love my Levenger Pocket Briefcase. Sometimes it’s nice just to write things down the old fashioned way!
Christopher Gavula — I’m currently addicted to my iPhone 3G. I’ve had an iPhone for almost 2 years now. It keeps surprising me. I can’t wait to see what this summer and iPhone OS 3.0 brings. But I’ve been eyeing the Touch HD too…
Wayne Schulz – My favorite current gadget is iPhone 3G. I waited in the blistering sun for two hours at the 14th Street New York City Apple store – and I’d do it again. I’ve had it for a year and love it because it for the best in breed applications that make me more productive. It is definitely something I would purchase again whenever there’s an upgrade or if I lost my current phone.
I also have a few honorable mentions – on the non-technical side I absolutely love the Evolve Showerhead that turns the water off after warming up the shower. To re-start the shower I pull a cord – but not until I’m ready to get in. No more wasted water. Worth every penny and I hardly notice that it’s a reduced flow showerhead which saves even more money. When I’m in my car I always use the new Passport Radar Detector – it’s the only one that’s stayed on my dash for more than a few months. I love the integrated GPS that locks out false alarms by location and the sensitivity is perfected so there’s a minimum of false alarms. Finally I’d have to say that my BlackBerry Bold, Google Voice and MacBook Pro round out the list of gadgets I’d carry out of a burning house.
Chris Spera - My favorite current gadget is my MacBook. I’ve had it for almost two months; and love it because its smaller than my MacBook Pro; and is powerful enough to run Windows 7 without skipping a beat. It is definitely something I would purchase again in a heartbeat! The PC is small, powerful and easily transportable. The only thing that it might need in the near future is a larger hard drive (500-750GB, for example).
Kerry Woo - My favorite current gadget is the NikonD60 SLR camera. I’ve had it for three months and love it because it has refueled my desire to capture the world as I see it in all of its splendor and as a visual person, capture more that just photographs, but memories I can cherish. Weddings, birth of babies, people, dogs, nature, pretty much anything that speaks life and expresses emotion. It’s true – a picture speaks a thousand words! It is definitely something I would purchase again in a heartbeat.
And of course the most important of all… Judie (following the rules perfectly I might add) wrote…
My favorite current gadget is the MacBook Air. I’ve had two since May 2008 (I bought the first gen with hard drive and the second gen with SSD), and I love it because it is so easy to use and travel with, and it functions perfectly as my main computer. It is definitely something I would purchase again in an instant (without even giving it a second thought!) – and I’ll definitely have to consider upgrading if/when a new model with more memory or a faster processor is announced.
(We know the last part is true since the first one was bought on a whim when Judie’s MBP went south and the second one was ordered pretty much before it was even announced!)
So we’ve had our fun..
How about you? In the comments we’d all love to know your answer too…
My favorite current gadget is ______. I’ve had it for _____ and love it because it ____ and ______. It is definitely something I would purchase again in _________.

It was so close between the Apple TV and iPhone that I had to mention both!
Don't make me choose, Dan!! You're tearing us apart!

Ha! Having to choose just one gadget was hard! I could have just as easily picked the Kindle 2 (LOVE that thing), but I figured the MacBook Air should win because it at least makes me more productive.

I know I couldn't limit myself easily either … I started off focused but ended up scattered as I was listening to my Touch and doing stuff on the Axim and … aw crud, there I go again!

I TOTALLY agree, Judie. I had a hard time picking between my Kindle and my MacBook. I think both are awesome; and the best purchases of the year!

Agreed. I love my G1….but let's be honest….my battery life SUCKS! My 1000HE battery lasts LONGER than my G1! That's saying something!
