Posted on 22 April 2009 by

Although it may not have happened yet when you read this, the Jaunty Jackalope is now streaming around the internet to anxious Ubuntu fans and early adopters.

Some of the things that are in this release are:

  • Gnome 2.26
  • Improved handling of multiple monitors.
  • X.Org Server 1.6
  • Wacom tablet hot plugging
  • Faster booting
  • Ext4 Filesystem Support
  • Server Edition includes “Cloud Computing” features and Turn-Key Mailservers.
  • Missing on their website is the new Osdnotify system for notifications.

At first, this looks like a great update.  Not talked about is the amount of work that went into making this run well on netbooks.  In fact, Jaunty ran better in a beta status on my Asus Eee PC 1000HE than the previous release.  Everything seems snappy, and boot time is improved with my 1000HE booting in less than 30 seconds.

If you’re a Ubuntu fan, hit the torrents and help keep them alive, as that’s the BEST way to get this release today as the Ubuntu servers will be inundated.

Hm, decisions, decisions. Ibex runs like a top on my XSP Studio 16 laptop. Maybe I'll put Jaunty on my test system here at work and compare the two and see if I want to adopt now or wait a little while. Oh, who am I kidding. You know I'll put that on tonight or tomorrow, LOL.
