When I have a hard time getting motivated to work out, a new pairs of running shoes or a new gadget will help me get out the door. Sometimes, just the desire to use my gadgets helps me workout. I have my iPod but my latest gadget is a Garmin watch that I use to track mileage and calories burned.
What I miss is that I didn’t buy the Garmin with a heart rate monitor. During my competitive days, I really got into measuring my pulse rate. Measuring your pulse rate helps you measure the intensity of your workout. I became quite fanatical about knowing what my resting pulse, my exercise rate etc. I had one of the original pulse monitors that you stuck your finger into, then the monitor that clipped onto your earlobe and then all the ones with chest straps. However, you really could never use them in the pool. The way they transmitted never worked in water. But, now there is a solution for those that swim.
Finish has just released the AquaPulse Heart Rate monitor for those that like to measure pulse submerged.
Unlike chest strap heart rate monitors, this one clips on to your earlobe and then uses infrared sensors to measure the pulses in the capillary blood flow. I never found the monitors that clipped to your ears to be very accurate. The clever difference is that with the AquaPulse that audibly communicates the heart rate to the user temple bone then to the inner ear. What’s neat is that with the device there is nothing to stick in your ear but you can still hear your heart rate. (I’m not sure I would want to hear it all the time so I hope you can turn it off.)
I really like how small the unit is and the way in which it attaches to your swim goggles. The AquaPulse Heart RateNow lets you combine the Aquapulse with H2OAudio and swim or surf to your favorite tunes and try to synchronize your heart rate to the beat… all at the same time.

The Garmin 310XT (the long overdue update to the 305) which is due to come out in June of this year will be 100% waterproof, including the HRM strap. Should be pretty cool. Of course it doesn't play music.
