Update: This contest is now closed, and the winner is CHUCK. Thank you for entering, and keep your eyes open for more Gear Diary give aways! :-)

In honor of Earth Day, The Gadgeteer and Gear Diary are holding another dual site contest. We are each giving away a Green 500GB Seagate FreeAgent Go USB hard drive with a desktop dock.

What does a portable hard drive have to do with Earth Day you ask? These days with content all going digital, there is no excuse for buying CDs and DVDs that come in plastic cases, adding to the boxes full of photos tucked in a closet or printing out stacks of papers wherever you go.

By embracing the 21st century, you can eliminate waste and clutter. It also gives you a more convenient way to store or carry all your precious files.

Julie reviewed the Mac version of the FreeAgent Go drive and liked it a lot. To win one of your own…

Contest Details:

1. Between now and 4/26/09 Midnight EST, create an avatar at gravatar.com. (it’s free and fast).

2. Come back here and leave a comment to this post so that your new avatar shows up (sometimes it takes a little while for the new avatar to show – don’t fret!). In the comment, tell us something that you already are, or are going to start doing that is earth friendly.

3. At some point on 4/27/09, Julie and I will announce our randomly chosen winners.

Contest Rules:

1. You must have a US shipping address to enter the contest.

2. One entry per person.

3. Writers for Gear Diary are ineligible for Gear Diary’s portion of the contest.

Good luck and happy Earth Day! :)

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

I have new double pane windows, a new energy star furnace and my landscaping requires little watering.

Is this one entry per person per site? I hope not because I've already entered over at The Gadgeteer too! ;)

I take public transportation in to work every day even though it would be a much shorter commute if I just drove my car.

Nope – you can enter at both sites and double your chances. :-)

My wife and I have made changes in the past to this end; also many of the things we’ve done help save a little money.
CFL bulbs, reusable water bottles, travel mugs (with coffee from home), thermostat a little lower in the winter, and higher in the summer, we had UV coatings put on our big living room and dining room windows.
There are more things I can’t think of now.
Our town does really good with yard waste and recycling, too.
I’m thinking of building a compost pile with my son this summer.

I’m not sure I’m eligible for the prize, since I’ve had a gravatar for a while now, but this is fun sharing!

  • Peter

I drive a fuel-efficient car as my main transportation. Always have unless I really need to carry lots of people or stuff. I miss the old car I had that got 45-50 mpg, though. (Of course, I like the AC I have now so there’s definitely some trade-offs)

We’re also going to be getting a more energy efficient HVAC unit soon. That should help.

  • Wahoomcdaniel

I am planning to be more earth friendly by purchasing a few reusable grocery bags.

  • ChrisSpera

Its actually law here in IL, but I use compost-able/earth friendly lawn and leaf bags for grass clippings. They are hauled away every week and used to make compost.

  • http://www.iloveourchurch.com webpastorpc

I ride my motorcycle whenever possible instead of my car to save gas. I’m also the pastor of a church that is going to build green.

  • breley

I've been using a me-powered reel mower on our yard, and we're in the process of installing new energy-efficient exterior doors and storm doors.

  • David

I’ve stopped using disposable water bottles.

  • Chuck39

I read ebooks almost exclusively – I need the freeagent to store my library. I really try not to read dead trees.

I teach lawn, golf, and sports professionals and homeowners how to properly manage their turfgrass/lawn areas with the least impact on the environment.

May the force be with you all. :) As Yoda says “Go Green, When 900 years old you reach, look this good you could”

Thought this T-Shirt plays well with my avatar and today's Green Topic. :)

Yeah! I wanna win. What a nice color, too!

I currently recycle, have been for years. Our borough recently decided to pick up plastics # 1-7 and I am the only person around here (that I know of) that's excited about that!!!!!

  • Burzmali

Well, I recycle, use mass transit we feasible, and use those reusable shopping bags and CFLs.

  • Brett

We have cancelled subscriptions to nearly all of our magazines and newspapers. You can get all of the information that is contained on that wasted paper on line. Also have increased usage of social networking tools like Facebook and twitter to keep up with what is going on.

  • http://superdumbsupervillain.blogspot.com/ Naomi

Can you win the Mac version?

We compost nearly all our food waste and recycle everything we can. Our trash cans are barely full by pickup days now!

  • http://raywaldo.com Ray Waldo

I have replaced all of my windows with high efficiency types. I use all CFL bulbs & leave the windows open as much as possible to avoid AC here in South Louisiana. I use rechargeable batteries and keep looking for new ways to save energy. For EARTH, I love trees and have continued to nurture them on my property. Even after Hurricane Katrina (when I lost most of my old trees), I did not follow the advise of most – instead, I retained several large oaks within fall range of my home. The reason: they are beautiful and they shade the house to reduce energy consumption.

  • bamfhacker

Wife and I bought new cars that are way better on gas then what we had.

Sooooo against plastic water bottles. Bought an aluminum one. If I do need to use a plastic water bottle…I keep refilling it until it starts to stink! :D

    Thanks for the contest!

  • Tim

I have replaced every light bulb in my house with the new energy efficient lightbulbs. I have also bought a rain barrel to use for our plants.

  • Jaxim

I've been eying to get one of these hard drives so this would be so great if I won. Thanks for showing us this cool avatar service.

  • Jaxim

p.s. I've been bagging my groceries with reusable bags. Again thanks.

  • inghamc

I use a tablet pc with pdf software to replace all paperwork – printing, filling out & signing forms, note taking, everything. Also reduces clutter to maintain sanity.

  • Hai Vu

I used to print our my source code for reviewing and debugging purpose. Viewing the source code on paper is much easier than on the monitor. However, lately, I have been reducing printing–a very small part to reduce resource consumption.

  • Chuck

I have stopped using dead tree books. I only read ebooks.

  • dbng

Drive to work no more than once a week. Car pool and train.
And Nalgene water bottles. Not brave enough to drop the disposable diapers though…

  • http://www.gamingwithchildren.com Michael Anderson

Drive a hybrid, use energy efficient bulbs, have greatly reduced packaging we use, and much more.

  • drowe

I just finished my last paper book, I’m going to try to do all my reading on my phone.

  • geek4life1986

I buy rechargeable batteries, use cloth shopping bags, refill my own ink cartridges, buy energy-saving lightbulbs, and even use the backs of old printouts as scratch paper. Just need to save up for that eco-friendly car, unless you are giving one of them away too. :)

We recycle (a lot). We’ve got containers for all the plastics, cans, etc – and then for the bigger stuff there’s a recycle place right down the street. We also end up donating old clothes that are still in good shape to places like goodwill.

Overall in the household we usually produce one bag (or less) of trash a week, and we could probably cut that down even further if we started composting.

  • StoicJim

We recycle all paper, plastic and glass on our list for our county’s recycle program. We’ve also started composting all the organic waste from our food preparation (including coffee grounds!). We’ve switch most of our light bulbs to low powered florescent bulbs and just purchased a Honda Fit to reduce gasoline consumption.

  • Q

I make a point of using reusable bags, whether it’s grocery shopping or some other kind. If it can be recycled, it gets recycled. (They’ll take windowpane envelopes too, as long as they’re not destroyed. I walk or take the bus/subway for most of the places I go. I turn off lights that aren’t in use. And I’m working on switching all the plug-in electronics to surge protectors so they can be turned off or unplugged.
