If you own a Samsung Epix, you’ve probably seen this message. The results are not fun: dropped connections, freezes, all manner of exciting crashes. Plus wondering what on earth a slog dump is and why it has forced itself onto your poor innocent phone.
Finally, AT&T and Samsung have released a patch for this mysterious bug! Unfortunately, you can’t install it yourself, but if you call customer service (800-331-0500) and explain you’d like the Epix patch, they can push the update to you. One warning: there have been discussions of additional issues caused by the update for some users, so beware. AT&T’s support website has some very unhappy users, but bear in mind that on the internet, the happy users are often less vocal than the disgruntled ones.
Also, if you haven’t already done so, go here for the Samsung Notifications patch. Samsung, in their zeal to wring every last drop of battery life out of the phone, created a bug where the phone does not notify you of new email messages while the phone is off. This patch fixes that for Pocket Outlook users. If you use a 3rd party option like Flexmail, the notification patch will not work. The way I’ve gotten around this is through PhoneAlarm, so it might help to factor that extra cost into your purchase of Flexmail if you use this phone.
I asked for AT&T to push the slog update to my phone. If I have any issues I will be sure to post an update!

A quick note or two:
- Even though AT&T indicates that a hard reset isn’t required, it is advisable to do one.
- After the FOTA, the notification patch isn’t needed if you do a hard reset.
- Also if you do a hard reset, the ascending ring annoyance is resolved.
- Many of the AT&T CSRs are pretty clueless. Advice I have seen has been to have them search their KB for “SLOG DUMP”, but also AT&T KB article 145147 should be the reference to it.
This fixes some issues, but generates new issues. Your mileage may vary with it, and I highly recommend reading the threads in the Samsung forum on AT&T’s customer support forums.
I’ll never understand how this fix (much less the phone itself with the old ROM) got out of QA.

Very strange…the update never found its way to my phone (might be because AT&T thinks I still have an iphone, despite having owned the Epix for 6 months). I am calling them again for it. I know there are risks, but I am hoping it will fix some odd issues. If not, then I will either see if they’ll exchange it, buy an unlocked phone, or flat out cancel my contract and move to Verizon and set up a family plan with my girlfriend. The way I see it, I either get some bugs fixed on my phone, I get AT&T to fix my phone/give me a new phone, or I get a slightly cheaper plan through Verizon and amortize the cost of the ETF over the months I save through VZW.

Ok, here are my thoughts now that I have the update. Haven’t done a hard reset yet, but I did a soft reset after the update was completed. Ascending ringtone fix is working and so far I have not had any dialing issues (only test dialed once though). No texts yet but hopefully everything is fine on that front. And I can’t test the email patch because I don’t use poutlook, I use flexmail, and the Epix seems to still be stubborn about working with flexmail.
I will continue to update if I run into any problems or have to hard reset.
