It wasn’t long ago that I was completely perplexed by the concept of a dual iPod charger. Unless a couple each had an iPhone who needs one? Fast forward a bit and the answer is… ME. Yup, with my iPhone, iPod Touch and nano (for when I want to go super-light), I am the poster-child for why someone might need a dual charger. Fortunately the new Dual Dock Charging Station from RichardSolo has me covered. Let’s take a look. Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Amazon has launched a free BlackBerry application, allowing customers to find, discover, and purchase products directly from their smartphone. The application is optimized for BlackBerry devices with track-ball interfaces. This means, at least for now, BlackBerry Storm users are left out in the cold (sorry, those of you still clinging on to your track-wheel 8700 or earlier models won’t be able to use the application either).… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Sometimes you actually feel like your vote matters … and within six months of my first vote cast anywhere but Massachusetts I have that feeling. New York representative Eric Massa has said he plans to introduce a bill that would invalidate the plans by broadband providers such as Time Warner, AT&T and Comcast to charge tiered pricing based on usage, according to a blog posting at Wired. A lot has been written about Apple not permitting turn-by-turn navigation apps into the App Store. But along comes G-Map – a turn-by turn navigation app utilizing locally-stored maps. I’ll be taking a look at recently released 1.3 version of G-Map U.S. East and G-Map U.S. West. Was it worth the wait? Read on…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

So this past Friday I was watching an episode of Numb3rs, a fictional FBI drama about an FBI team lead by Agent Don Epps which uses the services of Don’s brother, Charlie (who is a university Mathematics professor) to solve crimes. Although the episode titled “Animal Rites”, which centered around the death of Charlie’s college colleague, professor Nelson Horowitz, was nothing to write home about (pun unintended), one particular piece of dialog between the two main characters caught my attention. This excerpt comes from a discussion Charlie is having with Don about the idea of getting the FBI to implant keyword-searching programs on web servers where Animal Rights activists frequently chat: Charlie: I can only see data that meets my criteria, everything else remains private. So, the person who killed Nelson will never know we observed him. Don: Is that legal? Charlie: Uh, it’s not illegal. Technology’s ahead of the law. Don: Alright. Well, I’ll get going on the warrant.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Forrester Research has released a new study that reverses it’s former position that the iPhone shouldn’t be used in a business capaciity. Now they say that, although the iPhone has limitations, especially in an MS-based environment, it’s positives, namely it’s web browser, outweigh those negatives. The reason? Users like using the iPhone more, so they are more likely to use it, hence more overall productivity. With the high overall level of propaganda surrounding mobile devices these days, how do you pick a device that will suit your needs? A number of us here at Gear Diary hear this question regularly, and I always tell people to ask themselves a few questions: 1) What task is most important Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Ok, so I finally convinced my wife into buying a Wii, and being the loving woman she is it was my Christmas gift. Since then on any given day you can drive past our house and see two grown adults swinging their arms around like Orangutans in a zoo…..hehe and if I am quick enough I can open the shades while she is using Wii Fit to Hoola Hoop! So now the folks over at CNET have posted that Nintendo has finally announced the release day of the MotionPlus attachment that was shown at last years E3. It will be available June 8 for $20. MotionPlus promises a more precise and accurate experience while Continue reading on Gear Diary …

This is Mark Rejhon in a YouTube typing demonstration. I found this in a post over on BlackBerryForums where he volunteered to represent the BlackBerry device in a typing competition. He’s a retired moderator over at BlackBerry forums and by all appearances is pretty good at typing on his BlackBerry Bold. Perhaps “pretty good” is an understatement. How does 75 words per minute on a BlackBerry Bold sound? I’m not sure that I can type that fast on a regular keyboard! Take a look at the video proof above. Once you’ve had a good experiences with a line of products or a particular manufacturer, it’s hard not to develop some loyalty, whether that loyalty is based on reliability, functionality, innovation, or aesthetics. I was an early adopter of the original U.S. Robotics Palm Pilot. My first PDA was the original Palm device. For several years, I upgraded each time a new Palm PDA was released and sold my older model on Amazon Auctions or eBay. When I bought my first Pocket PC device, I almost felt a twinge of betrayal (almost – but I got over it quickly).… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Microsoft is announcing plans for the next version of Office 2010. Expect to see widespread “preview” testing in the third quarter of 2009 with a final launch of the new Office in the first half of 2010. The technology previews slated to start in late 2009 should include new versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote as well as browser based Office Web Apps that Microsoft has been working. While it remains to be seen exactly what functionality the browser based versions include – they are not expected to be equal in capabilities to their desktop counterparts. According to Microsoft we can expect the browser-based applications to run in browsers other than Internet Explorer – with support for Safari and Firefox planned. CNET Continue reading on Gear Diary …
