I've dropped mine down flights of stairs and it still looks as good as new...

I think most of these minimal protection-type cases are really just fashion statements, but the iPhone is really tough enough that it just needs basic protection from scratches (unless you’re planning to take it to extreme sporting activities). Now when it comes to shock absorption I'm not sure a larger case, like the Incase Slider for example, is going to a better job at saving the screen from cracking during a major drop versus one of these back cover type cases.
The things with these minimal cases is they don't cover the entire phone (excluding the screen). There is still a lot of plastic and chrome showing.

@Michael – there aren’t a lot of cases that offer screen protection. Sure it helps with fingerprints, but I care more about the precious screen ...

The thing I don’t like about these sorts of things is what you call the ‘minimal protection’. It's not flexible at all.

@Raymond – feels like hard plastic which has been coated on the outside with the cork and on the inside with the rubber. More environmentally friendly and probably less fragile. Is there a metal backing or something, though? Wouldn't cork alone be too flexible/loose?

Nice! I was considering getting one of the Miniot iWood (don’t laugh) cases but this looks better.
