OSX 10.5.7 Hits Software Update

Posted on 12 May 2009 by

So, I’m home sick (a very RARE occasion for me), and I’m bumming around with both my new Unibody MacBook (review still pending…) and my MSI Wind U100 running a triple boot configuration of Ubuntu 9.04 (very awesome, by the way…), Windows 7 RC1 (comments pending…) and OSX 10.5.6.

I always check Software Update when ever I am on the OSX side of my computers, and while the check on the MacBook detected nothing earlier this morning, this afternoon on the Wind I was greeted with this interesting sight.

Leopard Update 10.5.7 has been released, and it is available for your general OSX goodness.

Picture 1

Update: The 10.5.7 Update installs just fine on the Wind.  The keyboard and trackpad work even after the install, unlike the 10.5.6 update.  However, video is reduced to 800×600 resolution; and installing the first of 3 video KEXT files kills the Wind’s display. The Wind reboots and gets stuck on the gray Apple logo screen, with the mouse arrow active. Letting the Wind sit and think turns the arrow into the spinning beach ball, where it sat for about 45 minutes before I killed power to the Wind.  Looks like I have to either rebuild the OSX partition and/or the whole 3x boot box (if the individual OSX rebuild fails to return the PC to its full triple boot functionality).

The KB article detailing the contents of the update states the following:

General

  • Includes latest security fixes.
  • Includes additional RAW image support for several third-party cameras.
  • Improves performance of video playback and cursor movements for recent Macs with NVIDIA graphics.
  • Resolves an issue with Dvorak keyboard layout in Mac OS X 10.5.6.
  • Improves the reliability and accuracy of Unit Converter, Stocks, Weather and Movies Dashboard widgets.
  • Addresses a situation that may cause issues when logging into Gmail.
  • Improves reliability when syncing contacts with Yahoo!.
  • Expansion Slot Utility for Mac Pro now reports the correct PCIe slot configuration.
  • Improves network performance when connected to certain Ethernet switches that have Flow Control enabled.
  • Improves stability for network home directories hosted by Mac OS X Server v10.4.
  • Improves Finder search results for network volumes that may not support Spotlight searching, such as Mac OS X Server v10.4, Time Capsule, and third-party AFP servers.
  • Includes several improvements to Directory Service and Client Management, which are described in the About Mac OS X Server 10.5.7 Update article.

iCal

  • Improves overall reliability with CalDav.
  • Improves reliability when automatically syncing with MobileMe.

Mail

  • Addresses reliability and sync issues with Notes.
  • Addresses an issue that may cause the BCC field to populate incorrectly when redirecting a message from the Sent mailbox.

Parental Controls

  • Improves consistency with Parental Controls and application restrictions.
  • Addresses an issue in which time limits may not work properly with full-screen games and Fast User Switching.

Printing

  • Resolves an issue that may cause certain third-party printers to print to the incorrect paper tray.
  • Non-admin user accounts can now be allowed to add and remove printers by enabling Parental Controls and selecting "Can administer printers".
  • Includes other printing reliability and stability improvements.

As with ANY Software Update, you’re encouraged to backup your Mac before you install this.  According to my install screen, my Wind is showing the update at 286MB.  Your download size may vary; as always, while this is an Apple recommended update, you are cautioned about applying this or any update to your system.
