Many people, me included, have been following the SLOG Dump issue that was originally posted on by Carly Z, in her article, “No more SLOG DUMPS!” here at Gear Diary. I’ve been very active in the Epix Support Forum over at AT&T, trying to find my way out of this issue. I finally bailed on the device, and traded it out for a Samsung Propel Pro (review pending, and yes… I’m much happier now…)
Interestingly enough, however, Samsung has released a new ROM update for this device. From the support page at AT&T -
|
Epix users will want to download this and install it ASAP, as this will likely be the LAST update from Samsung on this device. It is supposed to resolve all known issues, including the device’s Unresponsive Power Button, and includes the Fix for Samsung Epix Notification Errors, as well as the aforementioned SLOG Dump.
Get it while its hot, kids; and then come back and let us know if it has resolved your issues. Just an FYI, though – don’t declare your device fixed after a day or so… Give it a good week before you announce the final “ta-da!” The SLOG dump problem is something that appears to have been cumulative in some way (perhaps based on the amount of time accumulated in the call log/call timer log for the device). You’re going to need to give it a little time to burn it/use your phone before you declare victory. Please take a trip to the forum, download, install (and don’t for get the modem drivers, either!), and test out the update for a bit and THEN let us (and Samsung/AT&T know how things went.

I really want to install this update but I need to track down a windows PC. Hoping my GF will let me borrow her computer.
I am curious to hear what you think of the Propel Pro. I would jump to another device but I am waiting to see what phones Celio will be supporting, since I like my redfly a lot.
I haven’t had the awful awful experience with the Epix that many people have had, just a mildly unpleasant one. If it does anything striking to my phone (it finally becomes super stable, it grows legs and kicks me in the shins for cursing it out) I’ll be sure to follow up…

I committed lemming treason and picked up an Epix earlier today (after trying out an E71x for a couple of days and being reminded why I dislike Symbian) only to discover that the new ROM was out. Loaded it and have not had a lockup or issue at all. (other than the fact that… wait for it… fanboy comment coming… there is such an easier, albeit restricted, user experience on the iPhone…) That noted, there is a lot to like about this phone and it is very stable so far.

Good to know, Dan! Keep us updated on how it is going. Like Chris said, give it a few days…some of the Epix’s more, er, “lovable” quirks appeared over time.

Grr grrr grrr….I can’t get the update to install. I was using my GF’s vista laptop, and the update wouldn’t even recognize my phone. It kept saying “PDA not found” then something about fail.
I might try tomorrow by hard resetting it and trying with a pure stock phone…if that fails, well, I am out of ideas.
