It’s May, which mean’s it’s off to camp soon for my son and me as we had to Camp Pilgrim Hills with my son’s class for an adventure in Nature’s Classroom. One thing we always pick up is water bottles, ponchos and a new first aid kit, because we usually have lost or broken the water bottle, torn the poncho and used the first aid kit. Coghlan’s has come up with a unique package that lets me pick up some of the stuff I need in one shot; I am talking about Coghlan’s Camper’s Kit in a Bottle. The water bottle is available in an assortment of colors.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Netbooks are all the rage, but protecting a netbook as you carry it isn’t always easy thanks to their small size. Regular laptop cases are too large for most netbooks, and most sleeves that come with netbooks (if they are even included!) are cheap and provide very little by way of protection. The end result… it’s difficult to just throw your netbook in a bag. All this makes a sleeve or case that offers real protection an essential purchase when buying a netbook. Uniea sent me their latest Universal Case for 10.2 inch netbooks; let’s take a look.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Many of us techno-junkies already live on their mobile devices, so perhaps this is no big shock. According to a Associated Press report on a new survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of homes that have eschewed a landline in favor of a cell phone now outnumbers those who only have traditional landline phone service.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Los Angeles International Airport inspectors either intercepted the worlds biggest Twitter addict – or they caught a rare bird smuggler. I’m not quite sure how this person kept the birds all quiet during the flight into the United States. Surely someone on the plane noticed that his pants were a little “aflutter”. According the story in National Geographic these legs belong to Sony Dong and the bird poop on his socks caused Inspectors to look more closely at him as he passed through immigration and customs. Apparently it didn’t help that the last time he was in the United States he abandoned 18 rare birds in a suitcase causing his name to be redflagged to ensure closer scrutiny upon future arrivals. Smuggler Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I received a copy of RapidWeaver, a powerful Mac application for creating highly customizable websites using a variety of templates, as part of an application bundle last year. When I decided to redo a website I had long been unhappy with a few months back, I gave it a try and was impressed. I just tried a new template and am now even more impressed by the power and adaptability of the system.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Windows Mobile users can now kick back and enjoy the same a similar “on device” native Facebook client that BlackBerry and iPhone users have been enjoying for quite some time. This new Facebook for Windows Mobile 6 brings similar features to Windows Mobile. You can read news feeds, update status, upload photos — and even upload a video (something the BlackBerry and iPhone applications don’t natively support). Phone book is now integrated to the Windows Mobile world so you’ll have an updated list of the most current numbers of your favorite Facebook pals. You’ll have to dial or text these numbers from the application though as new records aren’t created in your Windows Mobile device. For a more complete review… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

This Nokia N810 is an internet only tablet that runs the maemo Linux-based OS2008 operating system. Never heard of that OS? Neither have most which might be why the N810 is quietly sliding out the bargain bin checkout aisles. Still, for those who craze one of these Nokia’s, $148 from the manufacturer isn’t a bad deal. The device has a 4.1 inch touchscreen with 800×400 pixel resolution that displays up to 65k colors. There’s 2GB of onboard flash memory and a single expansion slot to stick your Secure Digital (SD), MultiMedia, miniSD and microSD memory cards – so long as they don’t exceed 2 GB in size.
