Twitterific for iPhone gets an upgrade

Posted on 08 May 2009

There’s no question that Twitter is rising in popularity. Although some of the hysteria seems to have died down – the trend in usage is consistently moving upward. There’s perhaps no platform with more Twitter support than the iPhone. One of the more popular applications for Twitter, Twitterrific, has just received a big feature boost to version 2. New to the application: Better interface, themes, support for multiple accounts, support for searches, support for trends and (my big pet peeve about all of Twitter) – an ability to display full conversations instead of one sided snippets! Big Content in a Small Package

Posted on 07 May 2009

In my dreams, after a long day of completing triathlons, coming in first at poker tournaments and winning Pulitzer prizes, I would sit down in my massaging, comfy chair at my home in New Jersey and sip iced tea while watching streaming internet-hosted web content on my large screen television or perhaps listen to a nice long run of Radio Paradise. But until the next time I clutch my pillow tight, I will have to make do with the next best thing – the VuNow from Verismo Systems.  In the war for control of your television, this tiny package could very well be the “suitcase nuke” of media extenders.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: JAVOScreen – Ultra-Clear Screen Protector for Amazon Kindle 2

Posted on 07 May 2009

Chances are if you own a device with a LCD screen you fall into one of two camps:  Those who protect and those who don’t.  It only takes one scuff or scrape to forever scar the beautiful screen of that new device.  A good quality screen protector can go a long way in helping to keep your screen looking like it did the day you unboxed it.  If you don’t currently use a screen protector on your phone or PDA you might want to think about adding one. JAVOedge makes a variety of accessories for a variety of devices.  One of their more popular items is their JAVOscreen screen protector.  The key to any good screen protector is transparency.  Does it do a good job of protecting the screen while remaining undetectable to the user?… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Is that a WiFi Hot Spot in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

Posted on 07 May 2009

The NY Times is reporting that Verizon Wireless is set to release the first ever portable, personal wireless hot spot.  The device, which is made by Novatel, is called the “MiFi” and it should be available this month.  The MiFi will require a special data plan and Verizon will be offering a few based on the amount of data you’re allowed to use per month. Unlike the current line up of wireless modems available now, which must be plugged into the computer’s card slot or available USB port, the MiFi will allow up to five users to share the same internet connection without any cables at all. Imagine being able to connect to the… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

USB Boss Panic Button attracts more attention than it deflects

Posted on 07 May 2009

This USB Panic Button claims to help you cover up your illicit web surfing the instant you spot the boss behind your back. Simply lift the protective cover and hit that big red button and your computer calls up a work themed spreadsheet meant to hide whatever non-work releated screen is underneath. Now there’s not the slightest chance the boss will ask about a large red button covered by a plastic container that sits beside your desk — is there? For the super slow and terminally lazy there’s even a set of spreadsheets that come with the panic button. USB – Boss Panic Button – $8.22… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

QuickVoice adds accurate voice to text capabilities

Posted on 07 May 2009

QuickVoice Pro just appeared in the App store and there’s a pretty exciting new feature. Now you can use voice to text service SpinVox to convert your spoken message to text at no added cost. Why is this useful? Other than the fact that typing on the iPhone is challenging – think of how you could send notes (via email) to Evernote or even to groups while driving in your car. For only .99 this is one you should buy right now. Now hurry up an give us integration to the trendy social media sites like FaceBook and Twitter, etc. Dan has additional thoughts and screenshots at the link below. Amazon Announces Kindle DX

Posted on 06 May 2009

Although much of this leaked out over the past couple of days, Amazon, at an event held this morning, formally announced the new Kindle DX – a larger-format Kindle, designed to support larger documents like textbooks, newspapers, and PDF files. The new DX is 9.7″ (diagonally), compared to the Kindle 2′s 6″.  It also supports auto-rotation. They also announced content deals with 3 textbook manufacturers and trials with 5 Universities. Executive desktop GSM phone

Posted on 06 May 2009

If you’ve got more cellular phone minutes than you know what to do with. If you’re prone to dropping your phone or find it uncomfortable to use for long periods of time – here’s an interesting desktop solution that accepts your GSM SIM card and allows you to place cellular calls. Although the phone appears to be your typical desktop variety (save for the antenna) – it’s actually a cellular phone. There’s a re-chargeable Li-ion battery which means the phone is also portable (re-charger included) so that you can take it to any room in the home or office. There’s also a built in hands-free speaker. There are two separate models sold – each has either 900/1800 or 850/1900 – so… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: Memopal Online Backup and Storage

Posted on 05 May 2009

I reviewed Diino last week and while I thought that it had potential, I couldn’t really recommend using it as a primary online backup solution. I was trying out two other services at the same time, so here’s Part II of the trilogy. Memopal is a year-old start up based in Italy, providing online backup and storage services. They have two plans for consumers: a $49 plan with 150 GBs of combined space for backups and file storage, and a $99 plan with 250 GBs. Continue reading on Gear Diary …
