There are some hardcore Windows Vista fans out there, but for the rest of us, October 22 can’t come soon enough. That’s when Windows 7 is expected to be “generally available” to consumers – well ahead of its original schedule. Windows 7 will begin shipping to OEMs at the end of July, and by late October, you’ll be able to pick up a boxed copy or get it preinstalled on a new computer.

I’m glad it’s coming, but I’m not sure I agree it’s ahead of schedule. After all it’s really only a clean up and strip down of Vista. There isn’t much new here.
The product that was originally targeted to follow Vista is still targeted for 2011 (I think).
That said – this will still be a very welcome release.

It was meant to read “its original schedule” and I’ll update the post accordingly, although I agree that Windows 7 is really more of a Vista service pack and what it should’ve been in the first place.

The ‘netbook version’ as the Starter Edition is working out to be, still seems too hobbled … not sure how it will all fall out. Wish they’d take the Mac OS model and only offer one – or perhaps two – SKU’s.
