Sad news from AvantGo who were one of the first to compress and download mobile versions of regular web sites for easy viewing on portable devices such as PDAS and Smartphones. In the bygone era of slow mobile data speed AvantGo was used by many to synchronize mobile versions of popular web sites for subsequent offline reading and browsing. They served as a type of RSS feed that provided a richer browsing experience than the more commonplace mobile text content.
I’d lost touch with their progress for some time. As data speeds gradually increased the need for an AvantGo solution to compress web sites and deliver them to my smartphone were less and less. RSS feeds also took over and with Google Reader being free and easily accessible via most mobile devices the struggle to fill a niche seems to have been too difficult.
