Here’s an interesting graphic that compares the total cost of ownership between iPhone, Palm Pre and Android. I was a little surprised to see the gap is so wide with the Palm Pre being $1,200 cheaper over the course of the required 2 year contract. Sure you can argue that the phones aren’t exactly comparable and that depending upon where purchased the Pre may require a rebate – but still $50/month cheaper is nothing to laugh about.

Of course, that’s only true if you assume the user wants unlimited everything, which I don’t think is typical usage for a lot of people. Sprint will probably be cheapest no matter what, but not by as large of a margin.

That’s a really good point. I think that the reason they went with unlimited is that it’s perhaps the most comparable plan that all three carriers offered?

I agree with tamaracks — my iPhone plan is $61.37 a month INCLUDING all the taxes and fees (corporate discount) which encompasses 450 minutes talk, unlimited data and 200 text messages.
Not everyone wants or needs “unlimited” mobile service.
Using “unlimited” plans as a selling point will always skew to the carrier with the cheapest bundle.

Ironically enough, I hardly ever *talk* on my cell phone. 450 minutes is about 4 times more than I need in a heavy month. For me it would end up being about $240 for a Pre, but it might be worth that not to be on Sprint. haha.

They didn’t include the cost of the phone in the total, but that should raise them all by about the same amount.
