Early iPhone 3G S delivery too good to be true

As we reported earlier those people who’d ordered their iPhone 3G S’s from the Apple web site received the news today that their new phones were on their way from China and many showed a delivery date of 6/17, a full two days early than Apple’s earlier announced release date.
As first reported by TechCrunch.com it seems this early delivery was only a dream. Â A check of my tracking number tonight shows my phone making good travel time (it’s now in Anchorage Alaska) but the delivery date field, which previously did show 6/17, is mysteriously gone from the UPS tracking page.
Did Apple ask UPS to remove it? Â Perhaps they’ve asked UPS to hold all the phones to insure they all get delivered on 6/19?

Just checked my order- it left Anchorage and is now heading to the southern 48 with a delivery date of 6/17/09.

I imagine it will be something like the Harry Potter books – all ready to go at their destination but not to be delivered before the release date.
I pre-ordered mine at Best Buy today. My closest store said they only had about 5 pre-orders (requiring a $50 “deposit” in the form of a purchased BB gift card) so far, but that since I was on the list, I was guaranteed to get one without waiting in line – just walk up to the mobile kiosk area and check in to get it.
Unfortunately, I’ll have to wait til Saturday to pick it up because of other commitments, and until the DevTeam gets the unlocker down to use it, but it will still be mine!

Well, checked again- it is being held in Louisville for future delivery which I am assuming will be Friday. Sigh.

Yeah, there are reports of Apple pressuring UPS not to early-deliver.

Mine says it won’t be arriving until 6/22/2009! That really sucks…
