Welcome to a new weekly feature here at Gear Diary! Each week I will highlight the major video game releases for the following week, give a quick feel for what was released the prior week, and chime in with what is burning up my gaming systems … and hope you will chime in with your playlist and hotly anticipated titles in the comments! Without further delay, let’s get right to it!

Who ya gonna call? Yep – after delays, rumors of cancellations and more, we finally get the video game release of the classic Ghostbusters! Early reviews are calling iot solid if unspectacular on all of the platforms it is hitting (which means basically everything). Other than that … there are some other assorted games, including yet another entry into the Guitar Hero: Quest for Franchise Destruction series, and my personal pick – Dawn of Discovery, the latest entry into the excellent Anno series of simulation / adventure games. Check out the list!

As for last week … as if they were tired of showing up on ‘coming out this week’ lists all over the Web, BOTH Hinterlands: Orc Lords and Black Sigil released last week. Hinterlands: Orc Lords has been repositioned as an expansion of the original download-only game, and is being given away for free to owners of the original game through Steam or Impulse, and is available on CD or as a digital download for new players. The original was solid and loads of fun, and while I have created an Orc Shaman (one of two new character types) I haven’t fully checked out the new features yet.

Black Sigil: Blade fo the Exiled is a bit of a mixed bag so far – slow movement and a hyperactive random encounter rate on the world map makes trudging from place to place somewhat of a chore, but otherwise they have captured the classic jRPG feel of games like Chrono Trigger quite nicely. And yes, that comment in itself is a double-edged sword (get it – Blade? Sword?) as it reflects a certain unoriginality.

Other games from last week, including Prototype (X360, PS3, PC) , Rock Band Unplugged (PSP), and Guitar Hero Modern Hits (DS) are all getting solid if unspectacular reviews.

What I’m Currently Playing:

  • Mac: Plants vs. Zombies – just can’t seem to stop playing.
  • PC: Drakensang – thoroughly enjoyed this, and decided to take another go with a different character! I’m up to the Blood Mountains again after a couple of nice play sessions.
  • PSP: Final Fantasy VII – still having loads of fun, but this has crashed my PSP more than any other game in the 4+ years I’ve owned a PSP.
  • PSP: Rock Band Unplugged – fun to start, with nice sound and graphics and decent controls, it lacks something compared to the original … oh, I know, a real band and real-ish instruments.
  • DS: Knights in the Nightmare – wonderful music on the CD Atlus provides with almost every release these days go perfectly with the innovative gameplay and solid fun plot.
  • DS: Black Sigil – very, very different from Knights in the Nightmare, not innovative, but still fun in many ways. Overland map travel is a plodding grind, though.
  • iPod Touch: Peggle – if you missed the recent $0.99 sale, shame on you! I have put aside all other iPod gaming – which was dominated by Myst and The Sims 3 – to play this one.

So what are you playing? Chime in below!

Enjoy gaming!
