Ars Technica has an interesting story referencing a report that determined that most Twitter users don’t tweet, and many don’t even follow anyone.

Okay, I get the first part.  Twitter is becoming another source of news.  Quite frankly, I don’t tweet, but I do use Twitter to follow updates from companies, websites, commentators, or entertainers.  But not following anyone AND not tweeting?  That I don’t get, unless there are a lot of potential users who create an account, try it out, and then decide they don’t like the service but don’t cancel their accounts, as suggested in the article.

The story did get me wondering, though, if the nature of Twitter is changing as it becomes more mainstream.  And if you want a clear sign that Twitter is becoming a mainstream activity, just look at the fact that Trent Reznor has decided to stop using Twitter for personal updates and just use it for official updates from the NIN website.  It’s hard to imagine Reznor being associated with anything that could be construed as mainstream.

Given that the readers of Gear Diary are generally a tech-savvy lot, let’s hear how you’re using Twitter.  Do you use it to interact with others?  Do you just use it to get information?  Or are you just not a user?
