Apple - iPhone - New features in the iPhone 3.0 Software Update.

We’ll have a more complete perspective on the just-released iPhone OS 3.0 soon, but there are tons of early thoughts, insights and finds that are making the rounds already. What follows are some of those tidbits. We’ll be updating them regularly so check back often over the next day or so…

Tidbit: June 17, 2009 2:48 PM– Dan

It is one thing to see software changes after updating the firmware of a device and quite another to see hardware suddenly “appear”.

After updating my 2nd Gen Touch I was pleased to find the expected Bluetooth available.  I’m even more please with how easily it connected to my Etymotic ety8 headset and how good it sounds.

Note the new icon beneath the album art.

“My new favorite feature. Apps are automatically placed on the springboard in alphabetical order when they are installed. I’m loving the alphabetical install when you have 9 pages of apps it’s great.”

“Sidetracking a little, reviews of the 3G S are starting to appear too. The new camera alone should be worth the price of upgrading, considering how many people use their iPhones as their main camera. And you can focus in video mode! Pure Digital/Flip should be very, very, worried. Given how powerful the new processor/GPU is, (jailbroken) iPhones might get HD video recording sooner than expected.”

iPhone 3.0 hands-on photos - CNET Reviews

Although I don’t usually recommend “hacks” and I don’t know the outcome of these on your current AT&T (or other) service, the folks over at iphonealley.com are offering a link that allows you change your phone network profile and enable things like tethering and MMS.

Proceed at your own risk and with EXTREME caution!

I went to update some apps. Got this for the first time.

Pet Peeve- having to go to iTunes to input a promo code for an app. Pet Peeve… SOLVED!

The new App Store app in 3.0 not only supports search but supports code redemption as well. Yet another way iPhone OS 3.0 cuts the cord with the desktop!

“Just tested the Mobile Me Find Me Function. Found my phone in about a minute to within .25 mile.”

Then I sent a message to the phone. Arrived in a few seconds and played an alert for 2 minutes, even though my phone was set to silent.”

Find My Phone

Dan- “Took mine even less time to lock in on my location. The really freaky thing was that it showed me some of my earlier locations first. Things like ‘At 9:30am you were here.’ and it showed the location of the coffee show exactly. WOW!”

The spotlight search is uber slick.  It looks up ANYTHING. I may not search for apps, songs, or contacts any other way again!!!

Dan- and the email search is awesome! It looked fine until I tapped the search bar and it offered tabs to immediately refine the search. Nice!

1. Camera shutter seems faster now.
2. And the little icon at the bottom left of the camera that takes you to the camera roll is now a icon of the last photo you shot.

Travis- “I’m on a first gen iPhone and mine is much snappier!!”

There are a few more options for the double click home button too.

I have mine set to camera now.

Cool

OK – here’s one “blurb” (you’ll want to change the reference to a cleaner web link).  It’s a hack and I’m always iffy about posting hacks or links to hacks, but here it is:
