They were supposed to open at 7:00 am, but fooled everyone by opening at 6:00 am and people were already being processed pretty quickly. Nice. I had pre-reserved a phone and they did indeed have two lines, one for pre-reserved, one for everyone else. Concierge said they were taking a ratio of about 7 from pre-reserved to about 3 from the walk up line. I was in the store at about 7:00 am, out by 7:15 am. They hooked the new iPhone 3G S to iTunes and it activated it in about 10 seconds. Good to go.
Last year I waited about 3 hours in line alone. When I left, they had a line that would have been that long easily. My local AT&T store said they sold out at about 2:00 pm. I took my daughter in to activate my old iPhone 3G on her line, and by 6:30 pm when we arrived, the AT&T system was way backed up. Took an hour to get her number transferred and up and running for a simple number transfer. Interesting, the iPhone 3G 8 GB phones were selling like hotcakes. Hope yours is working now - the phone is great.
One other note, they were pushing MobileMe pretty hard. Big push was the iPhone locator service. Interesting.
