Get Your HP 12c on Your iPhone

I use a Hewlett Packard 12c Platinum calculator frequently at work.  I rarely use it for calculating anything that comes close to challenging its capabilities, but I like it nonetheless.  This model has been around forever and is pretty much a classic, but it’s still in production.

HP 12c

Beginning today, HP is releasing three calculator programs for the iPhone.  The programs are based on the 12c, 12c Platinum, and 15c.  This is the first time that HP itself has developed a calculator program for a mobile platform, but lots of others have attempted to write programs that have some of the functions and look of HP calculators.

The iPhone versions support the classic landscape mode of the original hardware, but also offer vertical orientations.  The 12c and 15c versions are available now, for $14.99 and $29.99, respectively.  The 12c Platinum is expected later in the summer.

Although expensive for iPhone software at $15, it’s a reasonable deal compared to the cost of the actual hardware version – the 12c Platinum retails for $80.

Jeff’s interest in computers and technology began by watching too many Star Trek reruns after school. His first computer was a Timex-Sinclair, for which he had the 16K – yes, 16K – add-on pack. His current interest in gadgets was spurred on by the original Palm Pilot; from there it was a slippery slope to Pocket PCs, Archos media players, Sony Cliés, and various Apple products.

One of my roommates in college had an HP 41c. It had an optional magnetic card reader, if I recall correctly.

Yeah, there’s no doubt that if you buy the HP branded software you’re going to pay a premium… as I noted, it’s expensive for an iPhone app.

Oh, I know you were clear, Jeff … it just STILL managed to floor me. Especially since my interest would be the 15c, which is $30.
