I hate to even bring this up in the midst of all this iPhone 3.0 madness because it might be missed, but we have a major announcement to make…and I can’t keep quiet any longer! Remember the post I did about how one of you could win a regulation basketball signed by the active player of your choice or one of two trips to the 2010 NBA ALL-Star Game in Dallas courtesy of Microsoft and HP? As you will recall, there were approximately two dozen other sites involved in this promotion, and I had mentioned that the odds for winning were pretty darn good. Understatement much? It turns out that two of the big winners were from Gear Diary! Read on to see what our readers scored!!!!!… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

AT&T, the telecom that never misses an opportunity to step in it, has made a rather surprising move in an attempt to appease the growing discontent among their iPhone 3G users. As you surely know by now, many who purchased an iPhone 3G last summer were enraged that AT&T was actually going to hold them to the two-year commitment they made last summer in order to get a $500+ phone for $199. Petitions were started, blogs were filled with rage and it was only building as this Friday’s delivery date approached. Then the most amazing thing happened- AT&T, the company that gave us the inspired SNL skit that ended with Lily Tomlin stating- You see, this phone system consists of a multibillion-dollar matrix of space age technology that is so sophisticated — [ she hits buttons with her elbows ] even we can’t handle it. But that’s your problem, isn’t it? So, the next time you complain about your phone service, why don’t you try using two Dixie cups with a string? We don’t care. We don’t have to. We’re the Phone Company. …has actually taken steps to calm the rage. Their release follows…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Ars Technica has an interesting story referencing a report that determined that most Twitter users don’t tweet, and many don’t even follow anyone. Okay, I get the first part. Twitter is becoming another source of news. Quite frankly, I don’t tweet, but I do use Twitter to follow updates from companies, websites, commentators, or entertainers. But not following anyone AND not tweeting? That I don’t get, unless there are a lot of potential users who create an account, try it out, and then decide they don’t like the service but don’t cancel their accounts, as suggested in the article.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

The Cocoon Innovations netbook case is pretty much my ideal netbook travel case. It’s durable, shock absorbent, airport friendly, comfortable, and it features a unique organizational system that I have never seen before in another bag. There are a few key things I wish I could tweak a little bit, but otherwise I was very impressed by the Cocoon netbook case.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Today’s GearSponsor deal is a $499 18.5″ touchscreen desktop computer. I’m a big fan of all-in-one style computers. Sure, they’re a pain to update for power users. And there’s always the downside that if one component breaks you need to take the WHOLE computer to the doctor. But where I find the all-in-one concept shines is when you’re looking for a computer to give as a gift to someone who may be less computer literate. … Continue reading on Gear Diary …

It is a typical day. I got up, grabbed my iPhone, ran down to the computer in my office and… nothing. Yup, no OS 3.0 yet. And if Engadget got the math right, there won’t be until early afternoon. Here’s how they figure it… Carrier 3 in Hong Kong just sent an SMS to their iPhone-owning customers that OS 3.0 will be out on June 18th, 01:00 local time. That would work out to 1pm today, June 17th in New York, 6pm in London, and 1900 in central Europe. In otherwords… I’m getting back in bed… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

You’ve got to feel badly for some developers. Sometime today their hard work will become all but irrelevant. The vision they had that enabled them to find workarounds to some of Apple’s self-imposed iPhone limits will suddenly come to naught. iPhone OS 3.0 means these applications are largely, or in some cases entirely, redundant. I put word out to my fellow iPhone users here at Gear Diary asking one simple question — “What applications you use that will be rendered redundant or unnecessary as soon as you load OS 3.0.” Here are the ones Larry rattled off in seconds… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

I try to stay pretty well informed when it comes to headphones, and I rarely find a company which surprises me much anymore. But, I have to admit that I had never heard of Aerial 7 until we received this press release announcing their two new models. I guess I just don’t go clubbing enough these days. Still, I really like their creative approach and impressive looking specs. I may just need to take a closer look. Hit the jump for the full press release. … Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Several web sites have picked up on the fact that Apple just clarified that trying to synchronize unsupported third-party digital media to iTunes – is unsupported. Thanks for the tip Apple. I’m sure what they’re referring to is the ability of smartphones like the Palm Pre to mis-identify themselves as an iPod and thereby synchronize non-protected music directly to iTunes. Apple wants to make it clear that should the synchronization break in the future (anyone think it won’t?) – that you’ve been warned. Apple via AppleInsider Continue reading on Gear Diary …

The iPhone 3G was launched internationally a year ago. From June to August 2008, iPhone mania reached a peak; lines snaked around phone stores worldwide, and for a while, the ubiquitous xylophone ringtone was heard everywhere. It’s been almost a year since then and the true 3rd-generation iPhone, the 3G S, is about to be released. In the meantime, a plethora of other phones have hit the market, and various Android, WebOS, Blackberry and Symbian smartphones are in the pipeline. How many of you are still on your 1st and 2nd gen iPhones, and what is iPhone sentiment like in your country? Continue reading on Gear Diary …

As anyone whose spent time on the Twitter micro-blogging service knows – if you don’t upload an avatar the service provides you with a rather bland default brown and blue frowning identity. June 17th happens to be the same day that Venus Williams, Barry Manilow, Newt Gingrich, and Joe Piscopo add another candle to their layer cake; if he were still alive, M.C. Escher would as well. It also happens to be the day that our own Doug Goldring entered this world. I can think of a lot of people who are glad for that. Please join me in wishing Doug a very Happy Birthday!… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
