Pay as you go mobile broadband coming from Virgin Mobile

Posted on 10 June 2009

According to website Crunchgear, Virgin Mobile today has announced a pay as you go plan for mobile broadband. When the service goes live later this month expect to pay $150 for a contract free Novatel Ovation MC760 USB dongle. The Pay-as-you-go VM Top-Up cards are slated to be available in 100MB, 250MB, 500 MB and 1GB sizes. The 100 MB costs $10 but must be used within 10 days. The 250 MB costs $20, 500 MB costs $40 and 1 GB costs $60. The pricing is a bit steep but this is a remarkable opportunity for the infrequent mobile broadband user to get connected on the Sprint EVDO A network. Crunchgear Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Quick Look: Hexistentialism

Posted on 10 June 2009

It is not every day that you come across a truly creative and unique game.  Especially one that can be found deep within the recesses of the iTunes App Store.  Let’s be honest, a lot of the games here, regardless of how good or bad they may be, are derivative or even direct ports and copies of previously developed games.  So. I was pretty excited when I got an email from the folks behind the new game Hexistentialism. … Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Is the HTC Snap the Ultimate Messenger?

Posted on 10 June 2009

Mobility Minded has posted a very detailed review on the  HTC Snap.   It looks like the successor to the Excalibur/Dash packs quite a punch with Windows Mobile 6.1 and a blazing Qualcomm MSM 7225 processor, running at 528 MHz.  Also noteworthy is the 1500 mAh battery, which should give you up to 2 days of use without needing to charge up the Snap.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Posted on 09 June 2009

Good news Pleo fans, it looks like the news of the adorable baby dinosaur robot’s demise may have been a bit premature. Robert Oschler has confirmed that Jetta Company Limited, who manufactured the baby robot for Ugobe, bought the  intellectual property rights and other assets from Ugobe on May 21st. Jetta Company Limited is planning to re-launch the Pleo line as well as producing accessories such as the vital battery and charger component. Can you hear me now? – Palm Pre reported by WSJ as Verizon bound January 2010

Posted on 09 June 2009

The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that Verizon Wireless will be carrying the Palm Pre in their stores starting January 2010. There was some confusion a few weeks ago when Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam said that “over the next six months or so you will see devices like the Palm Pre” coming to Verizon. It’s probably still too early to say whether the exact same model of Palm Pre will appear at Verizon or perhaps a derivative of the Web OS based device. The Useful Things Magnetic Rotary Kitchen Timer Review

Posted on 09 June 2009

For years I kept a kitchen timer on the back of my stove. Yes, the stove had a built-in timer, but it never failed that I would be cooking multiple dishes that each needed timing; hence the extra gadget. Now that I no longer have a stove with a back on it, I no longer have an out of the way place to keep my extra timer. Why not on the side of the refrigerator? Say hello to the Magnetic Rotary Kitchen Timer, available from Useful Things.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Review: Snaztech Epic for iPhone 3G

Posted on 09 June 2009

A few weeks ago I wrote a Diary Entry about a new company selling cases for the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch.  Unltd. Case has added another case line to their online catalogue. The Snaztech Epic case, named after Unltd Case’s founder, YouTube reviewer thatsnazzyiphoneguy, is a simplistic back cover for the iPhone 3G but it has unique feature. No matter the color, and the Epic comes in 13 different color varieties, the back of the case looks exactly like the back of the iPhone 3G, including the Apple logo.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

OtterBox launches 2 new cases

Posted on 09 June 2009

It’s no mystery that we at Gear Diary are big fans of OtterBox.  Like most gadget junkies we want to keep our devices looking as pristine as possible.  Or maybe we’re just too hard on our gear. In either case, we like the OtterBox Defender series because it wraps your device in three layers of protection providing a safe barrier from the outside elements. OtterBox has announced the release of two new cases. The new Defender series for the Blackberry Curve 8900 and the Defender series for the Samsung OMNIA. Both offer the same triple protection, and they are available from the OtterBox web site Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Add a splash of color to your desktop

Posted on 09 June 2009

There isn’t much variety when it comes to the color of mice.  Black. white or blue are the popular choices.  But what if you want to add some color to your work station? Logitech seeks to change all that with the announcement of a new line of notebook mice in a variety of limited edition colors and patterns. The new patterns and colors will be available on the Logitech V220 Cordless Optical Mouse for Notebooks beginning today in the U.S for a suggested retail price of $29.99. HDX18t – 18.4 inch laptop with 1080 p, Blu-ray, 4GB RAM, 16:9 ratio – $979 shipped

Posted on 09 June 2009

If you were to look at the HP Pavilion HDX18t offered today by GearSponsor LogicBuy and notice the 18.4″ screen you might think to yourself “that’s one big ass laptop”. And you’d be right. But did you know the reason that the screen is that big is because it can offer a 16:9 viewing ratio – which is the same as HDTV screens. That means using the included Blu-ray works perfectly on the high resolution (1080 p) screen. There’s even a remote control that parks in its own compartment and a sub-woofer in the laptop base. Granted, this is not a laptop for a plane trip – but if your looking for multi-media at an under $1,000 price point – how can you go wrong? HP Pavilion HDX18t Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Bluetooth devices tracked to determine airport security waiting times

Posted on 09 June 2009

Researchers in Indianapolis have used random travelers’ Bluetooth phone signals to monitor the amount of time that it is taking to travel from the entrance of airport security through the exit. This allows them to know that the peak times are 6:00 am (20 minute wait) and just about any other time is normal (about six minutes per passenger). Monitoring was done from May 8 to June 1 to observe the impact of increased airport passenger travel associated with the Indianapolis 500. Similar technology is also being used to monitor motor vehicle travel time by the Indiana Department of Transportation which uses it to monitor for construction delays. … Continue reading on Gear Diary …
