BlackBerry App of the Week: Poynt

Posted on 27 June 2009

Here at Gear Diary there are a lot of mobile application reviews covering many of the latest and greatest offerings available.  Many reviews specifically highlight the iPhone/iPod Touch  –  and rightly so — given the quantity of applications available for Apple’s platform.  Don’t fret Symbian, Android, WinMo, and BlackBerry fans; there are plenty of awesome apps available for our devices as well. Let’s take a look at one of BlackBerry App World’s most popular applications, Poynt — which, as of this writing, sits at #8 on the top download listing.  Poynt is an all-in-one local search application that mixes a Yellow Pages, White Peages, and Movie Search service based on your GPS location. You can view your search results on an interactive map, locate restaurants or businesses closest to your location, get driving or walking directions from within the application, see movie showtimes, watch movie trailers and buy tickets, look up people via the new White Pages feature, send search results to contacts, and save search results directly to your BlackBerry contact list – all in one application.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Monitor – A Gear Diary Video QuickView

Posted on 27 June 2009

Applications like Prism and Fluid make it possible to create site-specific applications allowing “users [to] split web applications out of their browser and run them directly on their desktop. Prism lets users add their favorite web apps to their desktop environment When invoked, these applications run in their own window…” [from Prism landing page] It is a great way to have a direct line to some most-used sites without having to deal with the entire browsing experience. They work well and are free. Unfortunately, for many of us it can quickly mean having five, ten or twenty “site-specific” applications. It becomes a bit of a mess. That’s where Monitor, a little, free application comes in rather handy.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

GearGames Review: Myst (iPhone / iPod Touch)

Posted on 26 June 2009

As noted in my original article when the game was released, Myst is a classic adventure game released for the Mac in 1993 that was the best-selling PC game for a very long time until the arrival of the Sims franchise. Aside from being the ‘killer app’ that was largely responsible for the CD-ROM drive gaining traction in the marketplace. Since the initial Mac release and follow-up PC release, the game was re-released on the PC as a fully 3D game, got a series of sequels and even a (failed) online game, and more recently been released for the DS & PSP handhelds. The version for the iPhone / iPod Touch was released just over a month ago, so how does it compare?… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

iPhone 3GS availability page shows hour by hour status

Posted on 26 June 2009

I’m just back from paying my tax to Apple and upgrading to the latest iPhone 3GS. I was a bit surprised to find a short wait at my local Apple store. While inside I learned that Apple has once again launched their iPhone Availability page which this year features hour by hour stock status reports on which stores have the iPhone available for purchase. While I don’t think there are going to be widespread shortages, this online availability chart sure beats having to call the local store and wait on hold. iPhone 3GS Availability Chart Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Dungeon Fighter Online (PC) Launches Beta Announced Program

Posted on 26 June 2009

Free-to-play massively multiplayer online (MMO) games have become more and more popular … but that doesn’t mean they have gotten better. In general free online games seem to fall into two categories: ‘razor & blade’ style swindles, and crap. But Nexon America is hoping to reverse both the perception and the trend with their upcoming game Dungeon Fighter Online. As a first step towards that final goal they are opening up applications to participate in a closed beta test of the game. The application process is open from now until July 6th, with the test itself coming at an unannounced later date.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Sony Exec: PSP Go is ‘premium priced’ because ‘it is new’

Posted on 26 June 2009

Technology enthusiasts and early-adopters know this already: you almost always pay a premium to get something when it is first released. This is done because there is demand for the device that allows manufacturers and retailers to offer them at full price, perhaps a bit above intended longer-term price to help recoup R&D efforts. As I said, we all know this, but manufacturers seldom admit to anything beyond a carefully calculated value proposition. Until now, when Sony talks about why the PSP Go is priced so shockingly high …… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Way too efficient! The MiLi Pro iPhone LCOS Micro Video Projector

Posted on 26 June 2009

Take a moment and let that picture sink in…it’s amazing, right? Say hello to the PhoneSuit MiLi Pro, and iPhone / iPod compatible, rechargeable, micro video projector. Not only is it a portable video projector, it is also a speaker system. So the next time you want to share photos, videos, or even a business presentation, you don’t need to hook your device up to an external monitor, TV, or worse – huddle around the small screen. Instead, you can “scale your iPhone’s video up to a 40 inch for screen for eye strain free, relaxed viewing.” The site mentions that you can project from 5 to 70″, but that 40″ is optimal. The suit includes a built-in rechargeable battery so you don’t kill your iPhone’s, and even better – “[its included] VGA cable allows you to connect the MiLi Pro directly to your Laptop or PC’s VGA port. [Its included] RCA cable will allow you to connect most standard AV equipment sources such as DVD players, VCR’s, etc. You can switch between the various inputs at any time with the input source button.” The MiLi Pro will work with the iPhone 3GS, 3G, 2G and iPod Touch. Its price [...]
