As I mentioned the other day, the European Union was reviewing capping the rates carriers can charge on international roaming  across Europe.  Looks like it got resolved today!

According to the BBC,  the European Commission has set roaming caps as follows:

SMS $0.15  used to be $0.28

Wireless Data capped at $1.41 per megabyte

Per Minute Making a Phone Call $0.43 used to be $0.46

Per Minute Receiving a Phone Call $0.19 used to be $0.22

I guess it sort of sounds great until you think about it a little and wasn’t the European Union supposed to create a United States of Europe organisation?  Imagine if AT&T charged roaming rates at all between New York and Pennsylvania!  Guess they have a long way to go..

I realize those are maximums, but those rates don’t sound so great – especially when you consider the shorter distances (relatie to the U.S. and others) involved. In some ways, the U.S. carriers voice/data plans aren’t so bad. $0.43 per minute to make a call within the EU – wow – that’s a lot!
