When I first got a Grand Central (now Google Voice) account the choice of phone numbers was somewhat limited. The result was that I had to get a number with an area code that was…. well, out of my area.
In fact, it was such a jumble of numbers that it was almost impossible to remember. And when Grand Central became Google Voice this number went with it.
Well Google is clearly ramping things up these days with regard to Google Voice.
They have been rolling out new invitations, although not at a rate fast enough for those left waiting, there have been rumors of upcoming number portability, so you can take an already familiar number with you, and now this- you can change your original number.
Sure if cost me $10 to get rid of my original number but for that one-time expense I now have a number in my area code that includes my initials.
If you too have an original number you can’t stand you can find start the process of locating a better number under the “Phones” tab in “Settings”. That will bring up the Google Voice number picker and let you see if either the numbers of words you want are available.Oh, and if you do choose to purchase a new number not only will it become active immediately, but your old number will remain in services for three months.

This is great!
I just did it and got a number very close to my cell – which is what wanted.
Cell is abc-xxx-3141.
Now Google Voice is also abc-xxx-3141.
Sweet.
