I snapped a few jpegs with my Pre using Evernote. After OCR, the text is searchable but isn't appended to the note. However it does appear in the export file, along with alternate guesses from Evernote's OCR engine. So your solution above is perhaps the best route right now for large blocks of text.

Dan, finally got a chance to try this on the desktop client at home. I have often thought about getting one of those scanner pens (something I dearly wish I'd had in college!!!) to use for things like that, but JotNot might be worth a try. I do wish I had the 3GS camera so that I could get sharper images with the autofocus, though. I have trouble getting good images of text with my iPhone 3G.

I really like this workflow. You can also export the note and read the text. I haven't done it in a while, and I seem to remember that Evernote also included word guesses in the text, so ... ymmv on larger text blocks. I've used in on addresses mostly.

Dan, after Evernote processes the image for text, it should append it to the end of the note. Since it is doing OCR to make images searchable I assume it could convert the image to text easily but, unless I am missing something, that functionality isn't there yet.

jsage- I know Evernote will do OCR so that any image becomes searchable (love that feature!) but if I want to be able to copy and paste text that was in an image into a new document (so I do not have to retype it) Evernote doesn’t do the job. Or snap the pic from within Evernote. But it doesn't do the cropping that JotNot does - that is pretty slick.

Dan, Evernote will do the OCR for you.
