The software improvements are a large part of what I like about the Magic, feels much nicer than the older software on the Dream.
@Judie: Thanks ;-)
@Aaron: Need to try that, I've never been much of a voice dialer so didn't think to look for that!
You 100% spot on with the keyboard, the version of "with Google" models is crap, whereas the one on HTC branded phones is fantastic.
Price is a bit of an issue admittedly, you can get it free on plans over here, but you have to spend almost AU$100/mth (granted, a fair bit of value in calls/SMS/data is included, and the phone is free) to get it for no additional cost on a plan. Outright they can be picked up for under AU$700 on eBay which isn't bad.

@Joel: I would love to try Cupcake on the Dream, but alas I don’t have one anymore. The HTC software keyboard is fantastic. The guys over at XDA have yanked that apk out of the Hero so you can install it on the G1 or any other "with Google" android phone. It's 50 times better than the stock android kb. Better meaning it actually works and doesn't make you want to pull your hair out.
The Magic is a nice phone, but a little too close to my G1 spec-wise for me to pay the high price of $200. An iphone 3G is $100. This phone should be the same, really. Personally, I'm waiting until end of year to have a look at the other android phones that will be out by then to make a switch.

Voice dialing should be standard in cupcake. Yes you still have the horrible battery life and clunky form factor, but Cupcake (Android 1.5) is much better than what shipped with the Dream at the beginning.
I would not like the Magic/mytouch 3g as I experience the same kind of thing you have with the on screen keyboard on the dream. Plus I love the keyboard on my G1/Dream.
Nice review.

Actually Mitchell if you would take a look at Cupcake on the Dream, it’s a much better device.
