Functionality EVERY iPhone App Should Include

There is a little bit of functionality in the current build of the AP News app that just “wowed” me when I was trying it out last night. It isn’t a game-changer but IS something every news and RSS app ought to consider adding into their next build.

What is it? Simple, the new AP News App

seemlessly integrates with Evernote.

While that might not sound like a big deal for people like me (and a million others already!) who use Evernote as the ubiqutous notetaking app this make a big difference.

Now, if I am reading an article that interests me I simply tap on the arrow in the bottom left corner of the screen.

A new screen pops up offering a host of options for saving or sharing the article.

If I choose Evernote it automatically launches the Evernote app (obviously it needs to be installed already).

A few seconds later the article is in the Evernote app and, seconds later, it is synced to the cloud.

So why is this a big deal? A few reasons. First, it makes saving the full article just two screen taps away. Second, it saves the whole article and leaves the embedded links active. Third, because Evernote is cross-platform it makes any article you save available from any computer or browser.

Sure I can use ReadItLater or Instapaper to save and read articles at a later date. In fact, I do, but if this Evernote functionality were available everywhere I could use one service for saving clippings and articles instead of two.

Here’s hoping it makes its way into more and more apps!

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. +Dan Cohen
