Do you remember James Blunt’s song “You’re Beautiful”? Given that my tastes run to the obscure and *I* found it vastly overplayed, I imagine most folks were glad when it fell of the charts. Do you also remember how Weird Al wanted to release his parody of the song commercially after getting initial permission from the artist, but upon having the record label block it, released it for free? It was features in an article on NPR.org prior to the release of ‘Straight Outta Lynwood’. You can still download it here.
Well, apparently Weird Al is getting ready to release a collection called Essentials in October, and due to popular demand checked in on “You’re Pitiful” once again. If you follow him on Twitter this is what transpired:
The Essential “Weird Al” Yankovic (2 CD collection) is supposedly coming out in October. What do you want on it, tweeps?
In case you were hoping for “You’re Pitiful” to be included on my “Essentials” collection, sorry, this just in from Blunt’s manager:
“Thanks for your email, but both James and I will never approve this parody to be released on any label.”
Guess you’ll still just have to continue downloading “You’re Pitiful” for FREE… http://tinyurl.com/28z7et

Ugh, I’m usually a big fan of Weird Al, having actually went to one of him concerts and had a blast. Listening to his version was just as annoying as the original. which is really a tribute to him saying he nailed the music perfectly… ;P

That is true with many songs – but for me the test is what I sing in my head when the original comes on the radio. For this, the Avril song, and many, many others, it is the Weird Al version.
