RIM today announced the BlackBerry 8520 which is yet another variation on the BlackBerry form factor. This device will be the first to replace the trackball with a touchpad. Instead of having to constantly wipe the trackball on your pants to clean it – you’ll now be able to swipe a finger across a touch pad. While this seems like a step up – I’m puzzled that the camera is only 2 MP. This device is a low end BlackBerry that’s expected to be free on certain carriers. Just in case you’re not aware – better more full featured BlackBerry devices like this just release BlackBerry Tour on Verizon sport a 3.2 MP camera (a must have) and can be had online for only $49 with a 2 year contract. I’ve no idea who will be buying this dumbed down 8520 but I recommend it not be you.

Obvously I don’t sell billions worth of handsets, but personally I think Blackberry has waaaay too many models of the basically the same thing.
I’m a tech geek and have completely lost track of their product lineup. In some cases, they come out with a new model number because their is a different logo stamped on it and a different color scheme.
I think 3 current models should be the max of smartphone manufacturers.
Apple really has it nailed. Really only 1 model. Sometimes 2 as they clear old inventories.
