New Options While Shopping: Cyclops for iPhone 3GS

Posted on 17 July 2009

One of the great new features of the iPhone 3GS is the auto focus camera. I remember hearing on a podcast months ago that if the camera was improved on the iPhone, bar scan apps would finally work. If you are like me, very seldom do you shop in a brick and mortar store.  When finding yourself in a store how often do you see a price and wonder what it would cost online?  Of course a Safari search could find the item and current online pricing.  This would be after a search or two and could be tedious at best.  The idea of snapping a photo of the bar code and receiving information on my phone intrigues me.  Last week I was chatting with Gear Diary Editor Dan Cohen and neither of us had seen a bar code scanner app yet.  On my evening App Store window shopping I discovered Cyclops.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Touch Pro2, Snap and BlackBerry Tour apparently on deck for US Cellular

Posted on 17 July 2009

Web site Phonearena.com has a copy of a new rebate form that seems to show the HTC Touch Pro2, Snap and BlackBerry Tour as becoming eligible for US Cellular rebates as of today July 17. Seems logical that sometime between now and the rebate’s expiration date (November 12) that we’ll see this trio appear on that carrier. Or then again maybe they’ll just extend the rebate expiration. We’ll watch and wait – until then you can read the full story below. Phone Arena Continue reading on Gear Diary …

HTC Magic Review Part 2

Posted on 17 July 2009

It’s been  a month now since I posted my first impressions, and it’s time to fess up my thoughts on the HTC Magic. Truth be told, it has truly surprised me! User Interface The Android user interface is simple yet elegant, and was definitely designed with finger actions in mind. Unlike Windows Mobile, Android never makes you wish for a stylus. Icons are nicely sized, menus are large and the flicking motions to advance lists, web pages and menus become second nature as soon as you start using the phone. For some reason Android feels a lot nicer on the Magic that it did on the Dream, perhaps due to the way the Magic fits perfectly in hand and can be used (for the most part) with either one or two hands. The one thing that could do with a bit of work out of the box is the icon set, some of them feel a bit childish. The preinstalled theme is up to the carrier though, and replacement themes can be installed easily through the Market to address this.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Posted on 16 July 2009

A lot of states are joining the growing trend of banning cell phone conversations while driving unless you have a Bluetooth headset or car speakerphone accessory.  The truth is, this is probably a good move, which is likely to save the lives of many drivers and passengers who would otherwise become distracted while talking on the phone, eating a Big Mac, putting on lipstick, and driving all at the same time.  Motorola, today, offered their own solutions to this problem, with the Motorola H790 Bluetooth Headset and the Motorola T215 Speakerphone Car Kit.  Hit the jump for all of the exciting details. Think Geek TShirt Provides a Soundtrack for Your Life

Posted on 16 July 2009

There’s something almost desperate and definitely lonely about this shirt, but at the same time it’s geeky enough to be amusing. Picture yourself telling a lame joke that falls flat, and just as if you were the star of a sitcom – a track is cued up and ready to go wah-wah-wah-wahhhh. Or how about if you had just figured out the solution to a challenging problem and cheering erupted – not from the people standing nearby but from your t-shirt. Or picture yourself about to do something tricky with a drum-roll starting up as you began. I dunno…maybe providing your own feedback is a good thing if you live alone and… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Garmin Forerunner 310XT

Posted on 16 July 2009

It’s time for another in my series of “how it’s changed over the years.” In this post I showed you just how the helmet mounted flashlight has changed for firefighters and now it’s time to look at the Garmin Forerunner. I’m a runner.  This past May I completed my 10th marathon and I’m registered to try number 11 this November. My Garmin Forerunner has become an essential training tool.  It keeps track of my speed, distance, pace, heart rate etc. all while running and when I get home it allows me to wireless transfer the data back to my computer for analysis. The great thing about the Garmin Forerunner is it’s GPS based.  So it needs no foot pod, as some other running watches do, to track all of my stats, it does it all via satellite. Just like the iPod the Garmin Forerunner seems to get an overhaul every year and each year brings a newer, slicker design.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
