Mediafly Update for iPhone 3.0 Goes Live

Posted on 13 July 2009

The Mediafly team let us know that their latest software update for the 3.0 OS just went live in the iTunes App Store.   You may remember that we previously reviewed both the iPhone and BlackBerry Beta Mediafly applications.  This version (2.2.0.55)  supports streaming the video over the 3G cellular signal – meaning you no longer have to be on a WiFi network to download or view video podcasts or shows through the Mediafly application. The application is currently free in the App Store (regularly $0.99 for the Video+Audio version). Please note that you will need to uninstall any prior versions of Mediafly from your iPhone before installing… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Twitter push notifications for iPhone arrive via Boxcar App

Posted on 13 July 2009

Now that Apple has delivered iPhone push notifications it seems we’re still forced to wait for major applications to play catch up in adding this feature. One area that seems ripe for push notifications is Twitter. Most of the major Twitter applications have yet to add push notifications to their features list. Now there’s a freestanding application called Boxcar ($1.99) which monitors your Twitter mentions and direct messages every two minutes. When the app detects a message it launches a notification and you can start either Tweetie or Twitterific. Boxcar: Finally, Twitter Push Noticiations That Work Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Gear Games Review: Tradewinds 2 for iPhone

Posted on 13 July 2009

Striking the right balance in porting a PC franchise to a handheld gaming system is always tricky, as some games do it well (Anno 1701 and Sim City for the DS) while others struggle with the limitations of the platform (Dungeon Siege for the PSP and The Settlers for the DS). So while reading the press release for Tradewinds 2 got me intrigued about how it might play out, that excitement was tempered by the long history of mixed results bringing PC games to handheld gaming systems – not to mention the memory of playing the terribly mediocre Mass Effect Galaxy that was still fresh in my mind. Undaunted I took up Handmark on their offer for a iTunes App Store code to evaluate the game. So you can imagine my joy when Tradewinds 2 not only satisfied my hopes, but has become one of my favorite all-time games from the iTunes App Store! In fact, it was hard to pull myself away from playing to write this review!… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

First Look: Navigon (Lite) for iPhone with North America Maps

Posted on 13 July 2009

Other than AT&T Navigator, Navigon probably has more presence worldwide in GPS Navigation (especially through it’s stand alone products) than anything we’ve seen so far.  First they released their product for the European market a few weeks ago, and now they have released a “Lite” version sporting North American maps (full version coming soon). Let’s take a quick look at this offering from Navigon.… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

GearDeal: Owning a $2.99 Breathalyzer keychain is a signal you should not be driving

Posted on 12 July 2009

Web site 1saleaday.com has this Personal Breathalyzer Keychain – with Timer for Parking and Flashlight on sale for $2.99 marked down from what they claim is a normal $49 price tag. My take on this gizmo is that if you’re in a position where you have to carry a breathalyzer – you probably don’t need to be driving a car. But if you do – isn’t it nice to know that your keychain doubles as an early warning signal and a flashlight and a timer so you know when to stumble out and put another quarter in the parking meter. 1saleaday.com Continue reading on Gear Diary …

eBay set to become GM’s newest dealer?

Posted on 12 July 2009

General Motors announced on Friday that they are in discussions with eBay to introduce a new “Buy it now” option where consumers can purchase new GM cars on eBay. eBay Motors have already sold used vehicles for the last several years. This introduction of new vehicle sales marks a first for GM and if successful could conceivably create a new distribution channel for GM where new vehicles are sold online and serviced locally. According to the reports: A deal between eBay and GM hasn’t been completed yet, however, and both sides say they have been in discussions. GM spokesman John McDonald said the company sees the sales of new cars on eBay as an experiment that builds upon the existing partnership in Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Welcome back to the GearGames weekly video game release feature here at Gear Diary! If you are not a long-time computer/video game follower you might think this is a rerun … didn’t I talk about Monkey Island LAST week? You’re not wrong – last week I highlighted TellTale Games’ new addition to the franchise ‘Tales of Monkey Island‘, whereas this week we see a ‘Special Edition’ release of the original ‘Secrets of Monkey Island‘ from LucasArts. They claim to have completely updated the game with voiceovers, a new interface and full HD visuals. We shall see soon enough!… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

Baseball fanatics rejoice – scoring comes to the iPhone/Touch

Posted on 12 July 2009

My kids are total baseball addicts. They can name every player (and position) for the Red Sox. They’re also great at running commentary – which typically evolves into “he stinks” or “way over-rated”. The kids also play baseball about 10 times a day. Ok, well that’s an exaggeration though it sometimes seems that often. Doug’s got a great review of iScore Baseball Scorekeeping for iPhone/Touch over on Just Another Mobile Monday. This graphical application lets you keep track of everything going on during a baseball game – hits, outs, pitches, etc. While I sometimes shake my head at the prices people pay for useless apps like farting and burping – this one’s priced at $4.99 and seems like it would be invaluable for… Continue reading on Gear Diary …

On Sale and Reviewed – ibisMail

Posted on 12 July 2009

After reading the recent reviews in the App Store I almost didn’t purchase this app at all. I did purchase it, however, since I figured one of two things would happen… either I would get a good email app that overcame the limitations of the resident email app or I would have the opportunity to post about Apple allowing yet another lousy app through their faulty review process. Well, I’m glad I spent the $3.99 on the app (it is currently 50% off ) since my experience has been nothing short of positive. ibisMail has already provided an excellent experience Let’s take a look…… Continue reading on Gear Diary …
